Windows 10 Virtual Desktops

I've used desktops in Linux, but now they are built into Windows.

This is described here...
http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/windows-10-tip-move-apps-between-multiple-desktops

My question is...

Can we split the Dock to another desktop? It appears that since it is a child window of another app, it cannot exist on a desktop other than its parent, but I'm not sure yet.

The idea of using a quick key (Window+Ctrl+Arrow) to switch between a maximized view of Sonar and a maximized view of the dock is very appealing.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

Unfortunately, I don't think so (I've tried). But if you're running SONAR full screen and bouncing or doing other operations that take over the computer, you can bop over to the other desktop and do other things like back up files or go online and visit the forums

Which is what I did right now, because Vegas is busy rendering.

    Awesome, Craig!

I'm totally using it to host all my instances of RME DigiCheck. It's so great to be able to flip to one desktop that has RME TotalMix, one for DigiCheck instances, and one for Sonar. Everything is perfectly laid out with just a couple of fast key strokes.

I just tried to make a screen capture video of it, but the problem is that the screen capture program I use is specific to a single desktop.

I like that you can have different instances of DigiCheck on different virtual desktops. Too bad that we can't launch the Dock in a separate process so we could do the same with that.

Think it's worth a suggestion to the suggestion box?

I wonder what the dropout risk is. Have you ever flipped desktops while in a low latency session? That deserves some testing.

A Windows virtual desktop should be thought of as a different computer. To my understanding the desktops don't talk to one another. I find them very useful on laptops.

If you want to switch between maximized track view and maximized dock you could just use "D"...
Or set up any screenset (or lens? Haven't tried yet) to look any way you want. I don't see how that would be any slower than the Windows desktop shortcut key and it's built right into the program.

For virtual desktops I use the free Dexpot.
    http://dexpot.de/?lang=en

But it is also not possible to move any single window from Sonar to an other desktop and keep them isolated.
I have also tried with other virtual desktop software.

We digitize tapes, vinyl, dat, md ... in broadcast and studio quality for publishers, public institutions and individuals.
    4 x Intel Quad-CPU, 4GHz Sonar Platinum (Windows 10 - 64Bit) and 14 computers for recording tapes, vinyl ...

    4 x RME Fireface 800, 2 x Roland Octa Capture and 4 x Roland Quad Capture, Focusrite .... Studer A80, RP99, EMT948 ...

I recognize that there are many efficient ways to change the sonar layout. I'm just appreciating desktops as a new way to achieve efficiency. I'm confused by John's suggestion to regard them as concurrent computers. The audio clearly routes around like it it's one computer. For recording purposes, I wouldn't want to increase my dropout risk, but so far, I have had no problems with it.

Fwiw, I stopped using screensets because I got periodic dropouts. Using key strokes and the mouse to make changes was always much lower risk. And frankly, the screensets changes are applied slowly.

In the past, I've definitely had to do a lot of clicking to move between sonar and all the other audio programs I run at the same time. This should make me much more efficient.

What I meant was for Sonar one can't put the CV on a different desktop as you can with dual monitors. Sure running different audio programs such as Soundforge on a second desktop would work. I don't know how much communication is allowed though. Will rewire work for example?

RME TotalMix and DigiCheck work exactly the same.

I believe the boundary is process. Things related to a single process must all exist together on a single desktop.
