[SOLVED] syncing mp3 to midi
Hi.. I've been asked by a friend to write a parody version of Paperback Writer for a birthday party---this Saturday. I'm not a stellar player, so I've downloaded a few midi versions for the backing track. I will play guitar and sing. The midi drums are passable when I insert Addictive Drums, but the bass line sucks. So, I download an mp3 of Mac's isolated bass. Anyway, what would be the best way to sync the mp3 with the midi drums? Thanks for any suggestions!

Depends on what you have.
Windows 10 64bit fully patched, 16 gig ram . PCR-800 Controller. (Working in Win 10 1809 64bit)CPU: i5 4670. Video: Nvidia GTX560ti (latest drivers). Audio IF: Focusrite 2i2 2nd Gen

Anyway, what would be the best way to sync the mp3 with the midi drums?
the opposite is the quick way: sync the MIDI drums to the bass by dragging the bass to the timeline and generate a tempo track. given that the bass player played in time, with a little clean up MIDI drums would sync to the bass. otherwise you might be much quicker by just programming a MIDI bass

Hi. If you have the latest SONAR version, you could just import / drag the mp3 track to your project. Make a MIDI track, drag the audio (mp3) clip to the MIDI track. It should now be a MIDI copy of the notes played in the mp3. Insert a vsti / soft synth (for bass sound), route the MIDI track to your bass synth. Quantize / edit to taste.

only my personal opinion but, screw synching it, fix the original bass line in the PRV.
its midi correct ?

That would only work if they're already in sync, at least roughly. If you have Ableton (or even a trial I think) you should be able to import the bass line and it will "warp" it to fit a steady beat. Change the tempo to your preferred tempo and export it so you can load it in Sonar. Alternatively, if you have one of the more advanced versions of Melodyne, you can load it in the standalone copy and smooth the tempo variations there before exporting it so you can load it in Sonar.

Where does one find an isolated mp3 of a McCartney bass line?
Paper Back Writer was a 4 track master; no?

Thanks all for the suggestions!! Might have to go with the easiest one as time is short. The isolated bass line is just a youtube version, so there are artifacts etc. on the mp3, but I think it will do if I can get the tempos match up. Might be able to do some clip editing on the parts of the bass track that have a lot a lot of background noise... not sure what they used to extract it, but its OK for my purposes. Probably used software similar to isolating vocals for a karaoke track??
A thought crossed my mind just now--- maybe I could find the Guitar Hero .mogg files and convert them to midi...
With regards to changing a Mac bassline, I think what Chuck was referring to was the "midi" bass line. He would go in and change it to the Mac version, not the other way. The midi bass line is pretty bad.

Quick follow up... Synced the Mac bass line to the midi drums pretty successfully without using Melodyne or quantize... Mac was pretty good sticking with Ringo's original beat-- not perfect, as I had to tweak the track via the nudge control, but overall, adequate for my purposes... probably not so much for somebody wanting a more professional "listen"... Also tried using .mogg files from the Guitar Hero/Rock Band game... no real difference. I think the mp3 of Paul's bass was taken from one of those games as I compared them and they were almost exact copies. On a side note, I tried to import the .mogg files into Sonar, but no go... had to use Audacity to convert them to .ogg first... Is there way to import .mogg files directly into Sonar? Thanks again
