Norwegian Wood

Hello.  New to all this recording and posting.  Here is a soundcloud link to an old Beatles song with a slight flair.  All done in Sonar!
Looking forward to writing and singing more.
thanks,

This is a very organic version of this classic tune. Very cabaret. Nice guitar work!

I sense a bit of a "flamenco/gypsy" feel to the guitars, which is pretty cool and actually seems to work well with the song.   Nice!

Hello: just listened to Norwegian Wood one of my favorite song of all time! Nice job. It is on my own set list when I do a gig. Sometimes I play it with 6 and sometimes 12 string. Really like your guitar style with that song. Can you share some plug- ins and settings you used?..verb, etc. Also wondering how you recorded your guitar. Thanks. I have been doing home recording for quite a while, and always like to share methods. For being new at it..very nice. Much luck to you. Charles

Thanks for all the positive comments!  Rasguado is great fun, and adds a slightly different dimension to what I play.

As far as the song goes, I recorded both guitar and voice (separately) with an AKG C414 XLII mic through a  Focusrite ISA one pre-amp.  Both the main voice and harmony where processed through Nectar 2 with just a drop of reverb.  The guitar was split into 3 tracks, one for main rhythm, one for the runs and one for accentuation of the melody notes.  I can see where there is some 'muffledness' as well.  Not wanting to sound like a ad for Izotope, but each part was processed through Izotpes's Neutron, which has many presets and unlimited adjustment.

I am still trying to get that optimal guitar sound, as I hear multiple resonances throughout my recording room, that I just can't get on the recording.  There are lots of little sounds in the room, like the HVAC unit blowing air that challenge me.  I will continue to experiment with a few other mics.  I do have a DPA mic that I will try out next.

I do like the Izotope products, as they do seem to bring out a richness, I don't quite hear with the standard Cakewalk products.

Nice job! Is this the "beginner's luck" I hear about?  :)

Such a great tune. Your main vocal is great, your voice has a very listenable quality to it. Lucky again!
    Nice job.

For the background vocal, you might make that louder 'cause as it is, it's barely there and it's hardly doing it's job of contrasting/supporting.

As far as "muffled" guitar, you might be having some phasey comb filtering going on in spots, perhaps? As you have tracked the same guitar lines multiple times, by random chance you may have stacked similar waveforms one upon another? Did you ever copy/duplicate/paste one of your guitar parts?

I'd say this is a really nice take on a great tune, thanks for sharing.

The vocals were done in one take.  I would love to say that the guitar part was completed on one take, but yes, I did redo some parts and cut and pasted a few things.  I will need to read up again on phasey comb filtering, to see how to avoid it!  Thanks!

I really like the guitar runs, as does my wife, and the tweaks to the chord progression. Well done. I find it kind of funny that you posted your version of this song the same day I posted mine. What are the odds?

Did you mic the guitars, direct line in, or both? Another technical question about posting a cover song: what "red tape", permission process and or payment arrangements have to done for a cover to be on Sound cloud, Reverbnation,  etc?

I just placed the mic about 10 inches above the 12 th fret and and just a bit oriented towards the sound hole.  The guitar is one made by Daniel Turner out of Victoria, Canada.  This particular one has a European Spruce soundboard and cocobolo rosewood for the back and sides.  It has a very beautiful sound.  It doesn't have any pickups or interior mic, so I just mic it as above.  I need to do some experimenting with the DPA mic and the AKG mic to see which does best with this guitar.

As far as the posting of cover songs, i would need to leave that for the experts.  I will inquire of a friend of mine who does recording and performing and see what his take on that is.

As far as Soundclick is concerned, I post cover songs in the Cover Song category and always, repeat ALWAYS,  attribute the writer in my little song description. In addition, I don't make a cent from recording anyone's music. I don't  suppose that would suffice in a court of law. but it occurs to me that cover bands don't typically bother with that stuff either.

Thanks for that guitar info...have you experimented yet with matched small diaphragm mics for stereo recording...a super nice result when you pan them hard left, and right.! Then it leaves a good center space for vocals..

You just gave me a great idea for next year's Christmas gift with the matched diaphragm mic technique!

Just a little addition on my technique, I didn't add any compression or EQ with the original recordings.  Just recorded it as is, then added that stuff later as needed.  I have read just a few articles that seem to say that adding some compression/EQ on the original recordings is a matter of taste.  At Sweetwater, the one engineer we worked with added just a touch of each as the performer was recording.

I am glad you see promise for stereo guitar recording. On one's I've done, I am using two matched Rode M5 mics - not very expensive and nice! I rig them up on a 2 mic-cross bar that goes on one mic stand, and this keeps them at a consistent distance (it is adjustable to some extent). One cool thing that can be done, is once you pan them hard right and left or less so to taste, then you could experiment with EQing each channel differently- to match the guitar's orientation - as seen by the listener - More bass on one side, higher end on the other.  Another really nice technique that is too lengthly to describe here is mid-side stereo recording - using one figure 8 large mic (often a ribbon mic) combined with a small diaphragm mic - strange sound technology how this all works, but wait till you hear that ! Just got a couple of Rode NT55 matched mics!  Just starting to try them out in a stereo configuration. One thing I noticed about these Rode's is that on the certification of 'matchness,' the wording labeling is for MIC A and MIC A in both the cardiod and omni positions.  I wrote Rode and they said this apparent typo had been present for several years and until now, no one else caught it.  They did promise a corrected certification once all departments involved authorized a change on the form.

I see this thread was a little older but nice job.  Really enjoyed your version.  This is also a song I love to play.  One of the few I finger Pick, I will also say I am enjoying Pooh Corner and the rest as I type seems it keeps playing after the first song ends. Makes me want to record an instrumental guitar album someday before my arthritis kills my chops...

I'm having great results using these little CAD small Diaphragm mikes I got on a Stupid deal for $60 for the pair.
I use only one and then my Taylor has the DI as well and I mix those to taste.

If you guys get a chance to listen I have finger picking style instrumentals on my Soundclick link. Some with added ambience and instrumentation; but I plan on Re recording these as purely Acoustic. Now when I do any DI, my sound has been greatly enhanced by going through a Fishman Platinum stage preamp.
