8 seems to be our maximum so far. That being said, just last night, I was thinking that it's been 6 months since we adopted our last kitten. And since we've been in Vegas, we adopt at least one cat every six months, well... :P

There used to be a sitcom called "Eight is Enough!" (No lava lamp??! Blasphemy!!! ) Nice candle holders though. Funny though, my "perfect" environment might be the exact polar opposite of yours - go figure!

He needs a fog machine. I used to have one when I was doing the lighting for underground clubs in L.A. You'll want the stuff that crawls across the floor.

I love cats, grew up around them. My mom had 5 at one time. My wife has always been mostly a dog person; so we have not had our own cat since I have been married. Funny though, we have 2 next door neighbor cats that come to visit us, almost daily. A black and a white cat. The neighbor has 5 cats, but these 2 really like us for some reason. They will be sitting at our door step when we get home from work. When we open the door, they will run in the house. Walk by our Golden Retriever and give him a nod. They head to the kitchen and we usually have a treat for them. They will then hang out for an hour or more and play for a little bit. Maybe lay around by us as we watch TV. My wife absolutely LOVES the black male cat, because he is so personable. He will rub on her and purr for 45 minutes. Sometime he will jump up on the sofa and lay by her, or even on top of her if she is laying and watching the TV. The neighbors are completely aware that they visit us and think it is kind of funny. They think its way better than the cats roaming the neighborhood and getting hit in the street. Lately, my wife has been stopping and looking at the rescue cats up at Pets Mart. She seems like she is getting more interested in them. You never know.

If abandoned, cats will leave and find someone to feed them. A dog who is abandoned will stay where they are and starve. Now that's loyalty! Portland got way more cats than dogs.

Being of a somewhat pragmatic nature myself, I do find cats to be a lot more compatible with my temperament. Mind you, we have some very affectionate cats - surprisingly so - but they are nowhere near as needy as our dogs. My wife is away for a few days. Her dog won't even get out of his crate, I have to pick him up and get him out so that he comes outside and does his business. Otherwise he waits for me to turn my back, gets out of the crate and pees on the carpet before climbing back in his crate. Even after 18 months, our younger dog still has streaks of "accidents". You can't take your eyes off of them. They really are like babies. Whereas, with an appropriate supply of food and water a few few clean litter boxes, you can leave the house for a few days and the cats won't mind. I also feel like we're always at the vet with the dogs - they're so high maintenance compared to our 8 cats... Yeah, cats for me, all the way. Though if we lived in a rural environment, on a farm or something, dogs would definitely have their place.

This is because dogs are your pets. Cats just agree to live with you and let you share their space.

I'm guessing that's also why they are more inclined not to pee and poop everywhere. Which suits me better, too. :P

Oh I don't know - I deal with a lot of cats in my line of work and I have met more than a handful who have been inclined to poop wherever they please. Cats often use their toilet functions to express anger. Like when their owners are away, they will mysteriously "miss" the litter box and start pooping just off to the side. Or the middle of the living room. We had a cat when I was a kid who, if you gave it the wrong flavor of cat food, would turn right around and pee in it before walking out of the room and licking herself arrogantly.

There are indeed problem kitties - we have one of our own. It's been a bit over two years and she's been a problem from the start, due to a combination of health issues and ensuing behaviour issues. She MIGHT stand a chance of acting a bit more normal in a house with no other cats, but I wouldn't bet on it. And of course, some of cats are just bad apples. A friend of ours has one of those temperamental cats - though he also has health issues, so I wouldn't rule that out entirely. That being said, in a very large part of the cases I've seen, behaviour problem has a human cause or an environmental one. Besides that one cat I mentioned above, and another senile 18 year old cat - who had so many health issues that we had to have her euthanized - in my experience, pooping and peeing just does not happen unless there is a health issue. Puking is a different story though - dogs can't hold a candle to cats in that department. Cats are the absolute masters at that. Ours seem to be allergic to clean floors...
