CC1 Velocity, Notion & Bravura Brass

I'm confused as usual. Bravura uses CC1 aka the mod wheel for 'Dynamics' which is also volume. If I make a midi file in Notion I adjust the velocity of the notes while making a standard midi file. This seems to do nothing for the Bravura instruments so they just play every note at max volume no matter what the velocity of the midi note is.

I get that it is cool for playing 'live' to use the mod wheel with one hand and the note with the other, but doesn't making instruments completely incompatible with traditional midi files create a bit of a problem?

The use of the mod wheel for volume is common because it allows you to change the volume on a sustained note, where using only velocity prevents you from changing the volume once the note sounds.

But you can use a MIDI FX plugin in SONAR to map Velocity to a CC.  The one I have is from TenCrazy.com and is called Velocity to CC -- though I haven't used it in years.  I think there are other MIDI FX plugins that can do the same thing, Cakewalk may even have included some with SONAR.

Here a link to the TenCrazy MIDI FX plugins:

These kinds of tools can be handy when dealing with external MIDI files.

I spent an evening searching for an expandible/versatile way to add additional peddles to control different things like expression, volume, soft, sustain, etc...  This small company has amazing options, inexpensive and able to do anything (midi to usb, multi inputs/outputs, etc... perfect for pianists/orchestrators who want to keep both hands free to play!
