Want some bass?

This instrument from 1850 can generate frequencies humans can't even hear...

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

As opposed to a normal bass that they just don't want to hear?

Actually the 20Hz "lower limit of hearing" is more of just a practical number than an actual limit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/...asound#Human_reactions

Anyway, I guess now we know what they played downtuned metal on in the mid 1800's.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

So I googled to see if there was a sample library.

Apparently one guy contacted the museum and they quoted him ~$60,000 for a seven hour recording session:

A conversation in a 19th century Paris bar on the Left Bank. It's 20 minutes after closing time...

An absinthe-fuelled game of "most stupidly useless instrument we can think up" has been in full swing since lunchtime....
"OK, Pierre, your go."
"Erm..... how about a huge bass fiddle that needs a wagon to carry it and plays so low you can't hear the notes?"
"Non, non, too silly. No-one could make such a thing"
"How much do you bet?"

If there wasn't some background cello music/narration, I wouldn't have associated this with a musical instrument and presumed it was just some mechanical noise.

Now I have yet another reason to visit MIM in north Phoenix (56th St and Mayo Blvd, just south of the 101, if I remember correctly). If you live in the area, or visit for spring training or any other reason, plan to spend a couple of hours there. It's a fascinating museum. They have live music there from time to time.

Who needs Gene, we have BAPU!
And he has an Alembic that doesn't just fart and scratch!

As opposed to "not wanting to hear it" ... hehehhe ...

COOL ... really COOOOOOLLLL ... however, this would make the PURRRRRFECT VST ... !!!! And it would not cost that much!
