Plugin Scan is still hanging and freezes the graphics every 3-4 seconds
Hey there There was sticky thread about Microsoft changing something in Windows making Plugin Scan hang on certain plugins during the scan and some strange work around was offered. I don't like to run Task Management, so I did not try it, and I noted some improvement with performance- the Scan is able to finish the scan about 4 times out of 5, but tonight I saw it hanging on one plugin again- it basically stops scanning and just shows last plugin it was scanning for long time. So this is NOT fixed with latest Sonar update. The consequence of this issue is minor when new plugins are not installed, but if something installed, it would not be able to detect it. Also when it does completes the scan, it always shows "700 plugins found, 553 new". Why is it constantly saying it found 553 plugins- they are not new. But this is actually NOT an issue that bothers me. The problem that affects the workflow and actual ability to work is that when Sonar opens and Plugin Scan starts scanning, it freezes the graphics for 5-7 seconds about every 3-4 seconds. The mouse pointer turns in to the circle (processing sign) and everything becomes unresponsive. It does not affect the Audio playback- the audio continues to play, no dropout. But the Graphic Interface becomes frozen and during the time it happens, nothing can not be adjusted- not turn volume down, not press Stop or Pause- nothing. But when Circle (processing sign) disappears- anything that I attempt to adjust (like volume fader) jumps to where it would be if I did adjust it. I have over 700 plugins. The scan runs about 15 minutes and every 3 seconds it freezes graphics for some seconds. This makes it very hard to work! Also I can not trust to use it for recording when it does that. If I record, when it freezes, the recording track does not generate Preview. When "Processing" stops, it catches up and the wave appears where it should be. The recorded material appears unaffected, but it concerning. The other day I had sessional paid guitarist in the studio- we could not start recording until scan completed which took too long. Also I found some parts on the track that missing the wave. It is like you see wave going, then it turns in to straight line for some time and then it starts again- 1-2 measures long breaks. Audio is not affected. I would home that this can be addressed by Cakewalk as soon as possible. This is new issue started in December. Until it is fixed, I have few questions: 1. Is there a way to abort the Scan when it started? Closing little blue area in right lower corner does not abort the scan. 3. Any solution to this problem? Thank you. Also did somebody see this error message related to UltraChannel (likely iLok), "This software cannot run because the activation experience thinks the authorization was found, but the wrapper could not verify it"? Thank you.

dont know if this will help you, but after I run a scan and I am waiting for the PIM to populate it seems to take forever and sometimes doesn't. I found that the process VST SCAN is still running in task manager. I right click and end the process and then eventually the PIM populates the fields. But if I select a new category it seems to take forever to populate the category .

Thank you for your reply. What is the OIM and what categories you talking about? The Plug In manager? I disabled the Scan on Startup, and set it to Manual Scan- will only scan when I install new plugins. But it is still some kind of bug that the scan "processing" and stops the graphics and makes everything frozen. I have 3.5 Mhz I7 quad core processor, it should not be hard for it to "process" the plugin scanning. And as I said- it is new behavior started in December.

Right I ONLY scan manually if I add a VST. Yes when I open plug in manager it defaults to open up to the DXI instruments and populates the plug ins . If I select, say VST2 instruments or Effects or any other category, the circle spins and spins its almost two minutes before the list is populated. So apparently the categories aren't in in some kind of buffer and the Plug In Manager actually has to rebuild the list of each category in real time. Now I do have around 600 some plugs but really it shouldn't take forever to populate the lists.

I was able to count till 12 while it populated. This is not too bad. But this is not my issue. My issue is that while it scanning, it let's say scans Kontakt 5- while it scans it, the graphics interface freezes. If the song is playing, I can not adjust anything- all controls- mixer, effects, plugins- everything becomes dead for 3-4 seconds and it happens every 3 seconds while different plugins are being scanned. I used to have scan running on background all the time- it was starting when Sonar opens and was doing its thing, never bothered me. I could mix, master, cut/paste- do anything- the scan was just running. Now when it scans, Sonar can not function. I am wondering if I have some other processes running on background that hard on CPU. These are all my old projects I am opening that have no unzrozen software synths. It has many effects on individual channels, may be this is what makes the system hang because it needs all the power for scan, but as I say- it did not happen before.

I have had a similar experience since the end of last year. When ever I update, the scan path for Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\vstplugins gets added. I only use 64 bit plugs so my inventory near doubles when this scan path is added. I've gotten in the habit of checking the VST scan paths after each update and removing what I don't want included. Scanning after removal of the 32-bit scan path brings my plugin count down to my expected amount. This, obviously, assumes that you are running the 64-bit version of Sonar and that you normally only run 64-bit plugins. Good luck.

I never disabled Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\vstplugins- it has been always on my path list for scan and it usually would say, "Found 700 plugins, 2 new". Not 535 new. And if it found it once, it should not say it every time. In the past if it says, Found 2 new plugins", if you rescan- it would say "0 new". But now it keeps saying it found 530 new plugins when there is nothing new. I used to rely on it to know if it detected right plugins, but heck with it. I just need it to stop "processing" and freezing the interface.

I had this issues with Win8.1/Splat last month reinstalling my system. after an hour or two I ended up just hitting "rescan failed plugins". 32 or 64 bit was not relevant. all is well now.

vladasyn How did you fix it?
Pure angry will, ;) after the scan not scanning all plugs I set it to "Scan on start" then exited Splat and rebooted the computer. Opened Splat and it did it's scan but still not all plugs loaded so I hit "rescan failed plugins" and it scanned the rest. I have no idea why it worked, I think I just got lucky. I did also try all scan options and I did hit "rescan failed plugins" after each reboot and scan type. good luck :) EDIT: it's "rescan failed plugins" after each option.

Hey, what is Splat? Is there a way to abort the scan when it started?

Splat = Sonar Platinum. Most scan problems seem to happen to folks who choose other than default settings. Just set it to do Background scans. That way Sonar checks if there's any new plugins not scanned since it last ran. Even if you were to install a plugin during normal operation of Sonar, the VST scanner will update that plugin only. Sonar does not stop working to do that ad any normal program operations continue.
