recording playback distortion

I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade my graphics card because it was intermittently craping out. I then replaced the old card and did not have that problem. However, My M-box now distorts newly recorded playbacks. All the old stuff is fine. There is no visual display of clipping anywhere. Anybody?

thanks,

David

Have you tried playing back the wav files somewhere else to hear if they're distorted?

They will be in your audio folder. Try loading them into Audacity/Wavelab etc.

Sometimes these issues can be really trivial. as JB mentioned, could be existing distortion, Could also be that you unplugged everything from your PC to work on the computer (to install the new video card) and now something is either - plugged in the wrong port, not plugged in correctly, a loose wire.
When you tried to upgrade your new video card, did you remove / try and update any drivers ?

can be so many things. I would start by going through the basics.
-Make sure the M audio sound card is plugged in to the same port you installed the driver to.
    -Don't plug a USB 2 device in to a USB 3 port.

Here is some new info: I exported a (distorted) file. I then played it in Windows Media Player, and it did so without distortion. What does this mean? So.....to review....Previously recorded tracks play w/o issues in Sonar and elsewhere. However, If I record a new track and play it back, it is heavily distorted (almost Like very low bit rate-sound) upon Sonar playback (prior to export). This same track is distortion free after exporting  (from 24/44 to 16/44) to something like Windows Media Player. Thoughts?

Check your sample rates, Check your routing and preferences in your M box.

Are you still on Win7?  My guess is that you have accidentally plugged your Mbox into a USB3 port (the blue ones).  It will not work in a USB3 port under Win7 and causes horrible distortion.  Try a USB2 port, prefereably the USB port it originally worked in.

Also you might try and grab the latest driver and install from Avid's site.

    Glad you got it sorted.

Having ascertained that the files themselves weren't recorded with distortion, I was going to suggest a routing issue.

    Merry Christmas.
