Upgrading to Sonar Pro - BUN files from Sonar 6 LE going to work?
Hi All, My old recording rig is getting on in years (custom built PC running Vista and Sonar 6 LE) and it's time to update. Building a new PC and going with Sonar Pro so I'm wondering how much grief I can expect when opening all of my Sonar 6 LE BUN project BUN files in Sonar Pro? I'm going to assume that I am going to have to set up many of my directory structures on the new PC the same way as the old so the path names match? Anyone have any war stories or advice to share when moving older projects into a new version of Sonar?

regarding BUNs, in theory yes, but it may be worth opening in s6le first and doing a "save as" to the usual cwp/audiofiles (bun format has been deprecated for a while now) before moving to s-pro... otherwise, make sure you have all your plugins installed...and you may find that some older plugins are DX only, everything is VST these daysgood luck!

I would use CWP files. I have never used BUN, but I see the odd post here where that didn't work. I've opened CWP file I saved in 2004, they always work. There may be missing plug in info, but if you install Sonar 6 32 bit on your new computer, then the latest version of Sonar all the old plug ins will load up.

Some people say BUN files don't work. There is nothing wrong with BUN files or the format in theory. However, they are like ZIP files in that if there's even the slightest flaw in the storage medium (e.g., a cell goes bad in a flash drive, a pinhole in a CD-ROM, sector goes bad in a hard drive, etc), you won't be able to unpack the file. With a per-project CWP file, that slight flaw may make a clip unreadable but you'll be able to retrieve the rest.

I always save my projects as both CWP and BUN. From what I understand, the BUN files contain all the raw audio and the CWP is the nuts and bolts of the parameters for the project (plugins, pathnames, eq and bus settings, midi data, etc.).

BTW since you don't upgrade all that often, you might want to consider the Platinum/lifetime updates deal if its still available. That could really pay for itself over time.

While this is basically true, The CWP along with its audio folder is what I store on a separate HD. As Craig said, Like archive files, anything that important to me is not worth saving in any other format other than raw files. Though I do feel your pain. theoretically it should just open. but I would open them in Sonar 6 and use the Save as function, Save them all on a HD with the CWP and Audio files in 1 folder. Project Example: Back in the saddleFolder Name= Back in the saddle - inside this folder is your CWP and another folder called Audio= containing all your clips.

It's available until the end of the month, so there's still time.
