Experiencing Delays and Distortion When Using My MIDI Device!

So I recently got an Akai MPK Mini MkII for Christmas as well as Sonar Home Studio for me to start making my own music. After days of figuring out how to use the stuff, I finally got everything installed, loaded, and ready to go. However, when I attempt to use plugins in Sonar Home Studio for my MIDI, the sound delays and is distorted. The distortion is almost like the audio glitches out or something. I tried turning the volume down, I thought maybe it was hitting a threshold but it still distorts even at the lowest volume. There is also quite a bit of a delay when I use the pads or keys on my MIDI. It makes it really difficult to record because when I try to play with the tempo/metronome, it comes out delayed and off tempo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm kind of in a rut since both of these problems greatly affect my ability to create my own music.

It sounds like you are using onboard PC sound system, and also possibly using the onboard Wavetable synth as output which will add a lot of latency on top of the onboard sounds system's latency.

    - First choose WASAPI Exclusive mode under Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording.
    - Start with the latency set around 6ms on the Driver Settings page of Audio preferences.
    - Insert TTS-1 or some other included synth as a Simple Instrument track, make sure the input is set to your AKAI, and Input Echo is enabled (probably will be in Auto-Echo by default), and see how the response feels and sounds.
    - If it's still distorted, bump up the latency setting a few milliseconds.
    - If it sounds good, but the response still feels slow, you can try lowering the latency. Minimum with WASAPI Exclusive drivers is 3ms, and a lot of onboard systems won't work well at that low a latency.

Ultimately, you'll probably want to get a dedicated audio interface with ASIO drivers to get the best performance with Home Studio.
