They should make New Year's Eve a Thursday every year

Saturday is the absolute worst possible night to have New Years Eve and that's a mathematical fact.

You only get one recovery day, Sunday, which would have been a day off anyway so no bonuses there.

And your Friday night that week is a washout because it's the night before the big one so everyone's saving themselves.

Thursdays are where it's at. You have the longest possible recovery time (Fri, Sat and Sun) and Friday night's always there as a sort of hair of the dog thing if you're game.

Of course I'm just hypothesizing here because I don't drink and generally spend my NYE's at home in my slippers.

While they're at it they should re-name it This Year's End - far more realistic than the mindless optimism that  changing the last number of the date will somehow make everything better.

    lol...

Not to poke fun (and I'm sure a younger sharke would likely agree) but there's a reason us hopeless/hapless/feckless barflies refer to NYE (and Paddy's Day) as "amateur night".

As a broken down old (perhaps before my time) punker I am even more inclined to simply be at home, alone and nodding off before the clock strikes midnight. I haven't even thought about going to a bar for over half a decade now. After years of gigging and maintaining a presence at several "locals" I simply find other drunks boring and exhausting (nevermind the pervasive chemical drug afficionados whom I've never been able to relate to).

I did of course make so many wonderful and interesting friends which is the one thing I miss (community... essentially that connection of sitting a slamming a few with gentle, like minded and familiar characters). Most of those folks have hermited themselves just like I have though so pub lurking/crawling/squatting wouldn't be the same anyhoos. Just drunken strangers who may be good people but I certainly don't have a decade to form the types of bonds I have with my old crew.

I was invited to a small house party with my old chums a couple towns over. They offered to come pick me and my gimpmobile up, drag me into the house and prop me up in a corner but I think, due to the snow and ice and my twisted anti-social behavior not put them through that and risk wrenching my body out of shape again just to be a duddlemuffin to be pitied rather than enjoyed. I'd rather a small group when the weather's nicer and I can actually have real conversations with them.

However this looks like it may be gearing up to finally be a "good"-ish year. So many things I've been waiting on and working on look like they're coming through which will slightly drag me out of torturous, starvation level poverty to semi tolerable, eating regularly type poverty. On top of that I have made things so I can finally and properly launch all the crazy music/edumacation/computorb shenanigans I've been blathering about all these years.

    My point...

There isn't one. Just want to wish everyone a safe and happy NY. Chin up, keep sluggin' even when shiz looks hopeless "Always look on the briiiight siiide of life... doo doo... (etc and so forth)".

Yeah man I never really enjoyed NYE that much even when I was a party animal. With rave culture in its youth and in full swing, it seemed like there was nothing that could happen on NYE that didn't happen on a normal party night at any other time of year. Except there was this added pressure to have a great time so it always felt like a letdown. I think my only really happy memories of the night was a couple of years in which we ended up bouncing from one party to the next and meeting a great set of people at each. Mind you the MDMA would have been a huge factor, so maybe it doesn't count.

Indeed. Thinking back (and I'm surprised I'd actually spaced on this) most years in the decade leading up to my "retirement" I was usually playing with my celtic band or my hardcore band (and sometimes both in the same night). That defintely made it more interesting and tolerable.

Without that I guess the only "non-letdown" NYE's were when I was out with whatever young lady I was currently tragically in lurves with and we just got wasted together nice and close in our own little bubble amidst the external chaos. Make out at midnight and go home for some foolishly sloppy sex. The rest of the world mattered not.

Then again we could do that any night of the year anyway. Heh.

Funnily enough as soon as I posted my last comment my friend called and left a message... I'm assuming to see if I was coming. Nice thought but I think I'll just do my usual turning into a turnip at midnight... being the turnip I am these days.

Oh... for the heady days when I was a fresh young zuchinni.

Year 2000 killed it for me. So over hyped, and venues tried to cash in. It was weird walking through Leeds city centre that night, it seemed dead. The illusion was lost. Now it's just a time when you know your friends will be doing something, if you fancy it.

I was banished from Vietnam for a week last Christmas and stuck in Phnom Penh doing nothing, so I made up for it this Christmas, As a result of how I felt on boxing day, I've not fancied a drink all week. Somehow going out for a drink tonight just for the sake of it, seems less worthwhile than maintaining some sobriety.

I'd be ineterested in grabbing some good food instead, but that would probably swing my mood to the occasion.

Since I'm on staycation I'll just stay home.

Since I don't drink, neither does The Lovely Lady, we'll watch a movie and hit the hay before or after midnight as it really doesn't matter a wink to us.

I did a "special romantic night" on our first NYE (which was also at home) and we both know I'll never be able to beat that effort. Why try? We just reminisce about it each year (this will be our 11th NYE together).

The Scots have it sussed; Monday is a Bank Holiday because the 1st falls on Sunday, then they have an extra holiday on the 2nd for 'Family Day' so Tuesday will be a Bank Holiday too  It will all barely wake up on Wednesday 4th which means you can't any sense out of anyone until Monday 9th Jan. Just frustrating if you're self employed like me.

Us too. Hunkered down in the cabin in the woods while everyone goes nuts in town.
There are many more people here than beds right now. The snow is out of this world so it's
a perfect berserk resort vacation for all.

I'm pretty sure that the gigs on New Year's Eve pay better than those on "This Year's End Night" (or whatever we're trying to call it to reduce mindless, unrealistic, unrelenting optimism). So, I'm voting to leave it as "New Year's Eve", at least until I get paid for playing, although it's been a few years since I played on New Year's Eve. (Modular humans often slow down on the gig front after engine-changes.) After that, I don't mind so much what to call it. In past tense reference, of course, I call it the last of the "Good Ol' Days."

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.
