Mutiple Computers - What are the rules fro downloads?

I just purchased SONAR Platinum.
I plan to replace my PC desktop here very soon.
Is it OK to download the product now on this older computer - and
Then in about a month - uninstall it, and
Then re-install it on my new computer?
Can you track that so that you will not think that I am downloading multiple copies?
That is what I want to do...
Let me know.

Thanks!

The situation described above is OK. The software may be installed on multiple machines as long as it is used on one machine at a time. Cakewalk does not restrict the number of installations, however; some bundled third party products do. For example, XLN's Addictive Drums and Celemony's Melodyne Essential permit 2 active installs. These companies have their own authentication schemes and require registration of their products on their sites.

I have Sonar X1, X2, X3 ans Splat. Can I use them all on separate machines at the same time ?

Windows 10/64, Intel i7 Xeon X6575 3,07GHz, 24Gb RAM, chipset: Intel X58 Express, Kingston SSD 240Gb,  Sonar Platinum , Edirol UA-25.  (Some extra VSTs: PSP almost all/  IK - AT4, ST3, / AAS - all/ TH3 full/ +10dB/ Melodyne Editor). EVE sc205 monitors, Defil Kosmos guitar, blue lava lamp, ashtray.  And there is some great music you may find at: https://soundcloud.com/pawel-jan-1

Probably not. Cakewalk issues one license to use SONAR for every version purchased, however; upgrades do not increase the number of licenses owned. An upgrade simply upgrades you existing license(s). So in the example above if X1 was the initial purchase and X2 through Platinum were upgrades, you still have just one license to use SONAR.

Even if it does let you run those on multiple machines, that would be in violation of the licensing agreements, to the best of my knowledge.

The only way it seems it would be OK is if the X1, X2, etc, were all purchased as separate licenses altogether, and not just X1 upgraded to X2, etc.  For an upgrade from one version to the next, you are given a discount for the upgrade, but as I understand it you would not be valid to run X1 on 1 PC and X2 on another, and so forth.  They clearly intend for a user to be able to have any particular Sonar copy (or pair and beyond if upgraded to additional versions) run on only a single computer at one time.

Cakewalk has been SUPER cool about not doing the dongle thing and all of that, and it is in exchange for them deciding to trust us to follow the rules we agree to - and if a bunch of folks did run Sonar on multiple PC's concurrently, it would diminish their sales income to a point where it could severely damage or even ruin their ability to exist.  That would be horrible - so most folks do try to appreciate the non-dongle trust that Cakewalk places in the user community to do the right thing.

And, I was not at all suggesting you were not - by the way.  That is obvious in that you asked it is was OK in the first place, so no probs and good luck with it all in any case. :)

I've been upgrading since the Producer edition and I received a different serial number for each version and I have all them installed and I can work with X1 on my laptop and with Platinum on my desktop without any issues...

This is true. Each product has its own activation codes and in the case of bundled synths, you may have multiple activation codes. This is because of the way Cakewalk delivers upgrades. An upgrade is really the full version of the product at a special price. That said, you still only have one license to use the product. Upgrades do not include an additional license to use SONAR. This is one reason an upgrade costs less than the full retail version. Cakewalk does not disable the old products and you may install any of them on any machine of your choosing. This includes installing the latest version of SONAR on more than one machine. However, the single user license still applies, you may only use one PC at a time.

I still have doubts about it.  I also upgraded several iZotope's plugins paying special prices and the licenses were all independents, I can even sell or give the old versions if I want. It'd be nice if someone from Cakewalk could chime in and make it clear for us...
I don't intend to desagree from you, Scook, but as you said "probably", I think you're not so sure in your statement.

I said "probably" because the user did not specify how the versions were acquired. In your case, it is clear there is one retail purchase with subsequent upgrades. In that case, you only have one license and may only use SONAR on one machine at a time. This is one reason you are not allowed to sell or give away old versions of SONAR after upgrading. In doing so you must give the only license you have to the buyer and you lose your right to use the product. Cakewalk has posted on this subject several times over the years and the policy has been the same every time. One retail purchase grants one license to use the product, upgrades to not add additional licenses. The activation codes are a byproduct of how Cakewalk package and deliver their products. Activation codes themselves do not constitute a license to use a product.

Cakewalk IS very clear about it, and you yourself must have checked the two boxes during Sonar installation, where you EXPLICITLY agree that it can only be used on a single computer at a time, and that you AGREE to the requirement that you are NOT allowed to give or sell the product to anyone else.

The license is for YOU alone to use Sonar on 1 computer at a time.  You are allowed to have it installed on more than a single computer, but you are still required by the license to only run a single copy of Sonar at a time.  That includes any version upgrades - they are all under the same single copy restriction, if you obtained, for example X2 on a paid upgrade from X1.  Only a single copy of either version could be running at the same time - you are NOT allowed to run X1 on one computer and either X1 or X2 on a 2nd computer.  To do so is an ABSOLUTE violation of the licensing you agreed to when you installed Sonar (either version).

CAN you run it on 2 computers at the same time?  Yes, you can.  DOING so violates the licensing agreement, PERIOD.

Cakewalk TRUSTS its user base to be honest about honoring their decision to place their trust in us.  They COULD have done the dongle thing, like many other companies, but they knew that to be a MAJOR hassle that pisses folks off to no end.  So, they opted to our supporting their existence as a retail company, by our not selling or giving away products that should have been purchased by those people.

Please please please please do your part in keeping Cakewalk viable in the music software industry, by NOT violating the licensing agreements.

    Thanks,

    Bob Bone

I think I was typing when he responded, and had I seen his much shorter response - I could and would have saved myself some typing.  :)

...  And Bob Bone is the guy who spent several hours with me four years ago, when I just installed Sonar X1, helping me make my soundcard work. That I will never forget, thanks again Bob.
