Remote control in studio

For anyone doing remote (i.e., playing or singing at a distance from recording desk) recording on their own with no engineer, there has always been the frustration of starting the recording and moving over to the mic, guitar, bass or whatever to play the part.  Sure, one can do precounts to get the first start right, but what if you had undo and could restart right there at the mic (or, for me, with the contrabass most of the time in an isolation room)?

Most of you have probably seen the few Android and IOS products that are out now, but in case you haven't, they are very handy.  They link to your DAW PC via your home or studio network (wi-fi), and they let your phone or iPad or Android pad control features of your DAW.  Some of the apps let you design the control, which can be tedious (although simply having transport and undo is a godsend), and some have pre-packaged DAW interfaces linked to popular products.

No plug here at all, but I use DAW Remote with Sonar and it is KILLER.  You need to install Apple's Bonjour driver and a clever driver called rtpMIDI (that is free, and from a great and innovative guy), and after that your app sees your DAW PC and sends and receives sysex.  The Sonar setup is gorgeous and flexible, with several pages of track-mixer looks and transport, and a dozen pre-assigned buttons for arming recording, muting, redo/undo and on and on.

I put it on my music stand in my isolation room and I'm in heaven, controlling the whole recording logistic right at my instrument perch!

You need to install Apple's Bonjour driver

Unfortunately Bonjour is the last thing I would install on my DAW. Do you need to install just the driver or the software ? and if only the driver, does the driver come with the bloatware ?
    thanks for the info.

DAW Remote appears to be iOS only? I could not find an Android version.

    Hi Chucke,

That statement leaves us hanging, and it's a bit unteneble.  I'm sure you could find something worse to install!
It's just a bare-bones remote printer driver for Windows by Apple.  I've been using iPads with it for four years now without a glitch.  Not sure what the bloatware is.  This is as simple and "quiet" as installing a midi driver for one of your keyboards; in and done and invisible.  Hope you didn't scare anyone off.

    Regards,

    Hi Bapu,

I use Midi Designer on Android devices.  There are others.  You can make a transport and faders in about 30 minutes in Midi Designer, and it is highly accoladed.

I have a wireless computer keyboard, which I can take 10 to 15 feet away. Start, Stop, & Undo (cont+z). It's not everything, but enough to get the job done.

When I find DAW Remote on the app store, it says it is optimized for Apple Logic, AVID ProTools and Ableton Live.  Is there a different one for use with Sonar, or did you use one of these as your 'DAW' when you started DAW Remote.

Once you have Bonjour Service and  rtpMIDI installed, what did you do next?

    Thanks!!!

Great way to get this job done!  I like the graphic continuity of the app a bit better, but your solution is killer.  AND, my dumb ass never thought of it (although my recording positions are a bit distant).  Cheers!

Hi!  It has a Sonar template that is killer!  They might just be trying to appeal to other DAW users.  We may be a minority!  Anyway, it has about ten templates, so the few you mentioned leave out lots of stuff that they did very nicely.

You install the two utilities, then you run rtpMIDI and give it your PC name.  That name will then become an available MIDI device in your Sonar MIDI setup menu.  Go to that menu and select it as both an input and output device, just as you would a MIDI keyboard.

Then go to your "Hardware Controller" setup area and select "Mackie Control" (the protocol for external control).  Under that, choose the name that you just gave rtpMIDI as your PC midi device.   Done.

When you boot Sonar and then start DAW Remote or your Android controller, it will see the PC device.  You go to connect ONCE YOU HAVE STARTED SONAR, and it will grab Sonar and open up to the DAW template that you have chosen.  Your faders and time-meter will instantly display their status in the DAW and your are ready!

    Let me know if questions.

    Faderport isn't wireless, Tranzport is.

I too have always just used my wireless computer keyboard. With key bindings the skies the limit.
But really, all you need is the Spacebar the W and R keys.

+1 to V-Control, i always had problems setting up rtpMidi, its finicky at best. The Neyrink version for V-Control worked out of the box.

I use AC-7, which for me works well for Sonar Platinum.  AC-7 came from the Apple store for my iPad.

Here see how I set this up,  and YES, you do need Bonjour to get this to work on your wireless network at home.
