Don't like new change with soft synth midi track

If I have a soft synth loaded and I click on the midi jack icon for the synth on the far left in the track pane, it now opens the synth window. This is really irritating. It would be fine if it was a double click, but a single click is how I put the focus on that track without selecting it. I've done it this way for so long that's it's just some new irritating thing I have to retrain myself to do. I wonder if there is a Cake.ini file setting that would return it back to the way?

If I want to put focus on a track without selecting it I click on the track itself. If I want to also select a track I click on an empty part of the track header.

Surely you can just avoid the tiny icon?

Works normally here on 2016.12. Not sure what you did to change the behavior but you might check you mouse settings. Maybe the left button is set to doubleclick with one click.

Thanks for verifying this. I did check my mouse and it's working right. After trying more things, I've found that Ivory, Dimension Pro, VSampler, and Kontakt, do open the synth window with one click on the midi jack icon at the far left of the track pane and Superior Drummer doesn't.

With Superior Drummer the midi track output is set for a drum map. If I change it to Superior Drummer for the output then it does open the synth window. In fact if you set the midi output to your sound card midi out then it doesn't open the synth window.

The normal behavior before 2016.12 was that clicking on that midi jack icon wouldn't do anything except bring the focus to that track. And this is what happens when you change the midi output to anything but a soft synth. I've tried several songs and it's very consistent.

Can you try this test with Dimension Pro? If it turns out it's not happening with you, then I'll try reinstalling from scratch or deleting my INI files or something. Otherwise I just have to break the habit of clicking on the midi icon and click somewhere else. Thanks for your help.

I assume this is an issue because you like the track header minimized, yes? The way it is now, you have a choice with the track heading minimized. You can click on the MIDI icon to open the synth, or you can click to the right of the input echo button (or any other widget) to give focus to the track.

Thats a new feature in 2016.11.

From the 2016.11 eZine.
You can open a virtual instrument’s UI by clicking on
a track header’s audio or MIDI icon, whether as a
Simple Instrument or as tracks within a folder.

and I am really liking this. before it used to be a double click. and sometimes if you were not directly on the icon it wouldn't work. like the new 1 click.

Ok, I see. Thanks John at least I now knew it's a feature and not an oversight and thanks Craig for the very good way of putting the focus on the track. I'll just need to break my habit of clicking on the midi icon

Confusion solved then. Since you didn't say, I assumed you were talking about separate MIDI/Synth tracks, not Simple Instrument tracks.

This is the behavior of SI tracks but not individual MIDI tracks where you still have to double click the icon to open the synth view.

Actually I do use individual midi and audio tracks for the synths, instead of simple instrument. the one click does the same thing for both, opening the synth window. The only exception is when using drum maps or external synths

Ah, then the conundrum continues. My 2016.12 works as I stated but I skipped .11 so maybe I missed the change, tho I was told updates are cummulative.

I had a quick play with this last night and a single click of either the Midi track or the associated audio track (in a split audio/midi setup) consistently opens the synth gui.

Different strokes...I love that feature. I can finally open a virtual instrument regardless of which track header controls happen to be exposed. But I can see why Gerry finds it frustrating. Habits are hard to break. Luckily for me, I've always been in the habit of clicking on the header background to set focus, so no retraining was needed.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Same here. It never occurred to me to click on an icon to select anything. Besides often they are too small to click on anyway. LOL

i like this feature.   I always had to mute/unmute just to see which synth in the rack is associated with the track i was working on.

I can put up with breaking habits when there's a good reason for the change and now that I see others actually like this, and it's really a feature and not an oversight, I'm fine with it. I still think it would make more sense if it was a double click instead of a single click. If so I'd not have to retrain myself

Me too.  it also beats the "Mouse not working to good" and its hard to do the X2 clicks.
