Addictive Drums 2 question
I'm not a midi guy, I use sonar like an multi track tape deck putting down tracks one or two at a time. In the past, I've used EZDrummer 2 as a stand alone program, figuring out my BPM, setting up a drum track in EZDrummer, exporting as a wav, and then importing that wav into my Sonar project. It's a process that has worked well for me. I get the impression I can do something similar with Addictive Drums, and I wondered if anyone could shed some light on the steps necessary to do so. I'm fairly old school in my methods, but that doesn't mean I'm not willing to learn new ways to work. I'm loving the software and enjoying the tricks I've learned already... Thanks for any insights you can share... Jackson

You could save much time by using AD as a VST within your project, thus saving several steps. Program or choose your beats, and either stay in MIDI mode, or freeze or bounce your tracks. Much quicker to do all this inside Sonar.

Lynn; So I would need to Start with a new midi track, and then insert the vst into that I'm guessing? I'll play around with it over the weekend. As I mentioned in my original post, I'm not real midi saavy, but I'm definately willing to give it a try. Thanks for the reply. Jackson

In the Synth rack, click on the red + button. Find AD2 in the list and select it. A dialog should come up asking you how many output tracks you want (select one stereo track to keep this easy) and if you want a MIDI input track (check that box because you'll need a MIDI input). This will add AD2 and an input and output track. Go into AD2's Beats section, find a beat you like and drag it into the MIDI track where you want it. You can convert the beat into a groove loop and stretch it for as long as you need it. You can drag other beats into the MIDI input track as needed. Once you're comfortable with that, you can edit the beats using the piano roll view.

Hi there - Personally I like to separate the MIDI track and synth track(s). First insert a MIDI track, then "insert synth", at this point you should see the Synth Properties window with several options. Check the box that says "All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo" then click Okay. You should now see about 9 tracks, one for each drum piece. Now go back to the MIDI track and set its output to AD2. In AD2, I set each output to "Separate Out (Pre Fader)" with or without Master. This should get you going BUT you may find that working with AD2 & MIDI can be tricky. You may need to create a Drum Map. Maybe others on the Forum can help with that.

You can also setup a project template, track template, and drum map for AD2 that loads the drum instrument and all of the tracks needed for a project. Takes all the work out of setting up a project. Plus the piano roll will now show the names of the kit pieces. Very cool! Then to access this tool, just use either [File> New > AD2 Project] or [Insert > Track Template > Soft Synth Templates > AD2 > AD 2 Track.cwx] It's already done. Just follow this setup guide. The zip file can be downloaded from here. There are just three files you need to copy into your Cakewalk folders to make this work. I would agree with this but I prefer to have my audio tracks as Mono, not Stereo, apart from any Room mics or Overheads. I couldn't tell you if AD2 has this option as I run BFD

Interestingly, when I attempt to install a synth, XLN Audio AD2 is not listed as an option. It is installed as it shows up in CCC, but I do not see it as an option anywhere in Sonar. User error perhaps, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not a midi guy...

Does the program do a VST Scan when you first open Sonar? (it should) If not you can do it manually. Go to Preferences/File/VST Settings. Here you can set-up the VST Prefs for when you open Sonar. The main way to keep track of your plug-ins is the Plug-in Manager. To open it go to Utilities (on top) and click on Cakewalk Plug-in Manager. Here you can keep track and manage all the VST's, Direct X, etc.

I see no sign of it installed on my system. I would expect to see it listed under Programs and features in Control Panel, but it's not there, not do I see a folder in C:\Program Files or C:\Programfiles(x86). Perhaps I need to reinstall. Another interesting thing I notice is that Sonar Platinum is not showing up under Programs and Features either. But it does have a folder under c:\Program Files, and it's been working since my initial install... weird.

Did you do this yet? https://www.cakewalk.com/Support/Knowledge-Base/2007013382/Addictive-Drums-2-Installation-Instructions A full license for XLN Audio's Addictive Drums 2 is included with your SONAR purchase. In addition, SONAR Platinum includes three (3) ADpaks and SONAR Professional includes one (1) ADpak. These products are downloadable by using the XLN Online Installer, which is available as a separate download from XLN Audio. The computer on which you are installing Addictive Drums and your ADpaks must be connected to the Internet in order to install this software. To download, please go to: http://www.xlnaudio.com/install and click Windows Online Installer. This will download the xln-online-installer-win.zip file, which contains the XLN Online Installer. Right-click this file, select Extract All… then the [Extract] button. A new folder called xln-online-installer-win will appear, open it then double-click XLN Online Installer 64-bit (if you’re using 32-bit Windows, double-click XLN Online Installer 32-bit) then follow the prompts to sign into your XLN Account and begin downloading Addictive Drums 2 and your ADpak(s). You will need your Addictive Drums 2 product key, which is available at https://www.cakewalk.com/My-Account/Products and in the Cakewalk Command Center

There's a zillion way's to use a Soft Synth drummer. Everybody here does it differently and for different reason. But the basics of it haven't changed in 30 years. Midi notes trigger the different pieces of a drum kit. You can find millions of pre made drum loops and use those Or like me and many others, you can play the part on a midi keyboard ( or better yet a digital drum kit) and make your own parts. Just bang along using a scratch vocal, guitar and the metronome. I have worked that way for 30 years so for me loops take to long to build. But many are good with loops and know where to find the ones they want. It would take me all day just looking. I also have some of my old Roland 505 Drum patterns I use to start a song out with. I guess those are sort of loops. So welcome to the wonderful world of creating realistic drum parts. We have all the tools so there's no reason to have lame sounding drums anymore. Nobody wants to listen to a recording that uses a drum machine. Here's a cool trick. Mike up an armchair left and right arms with 2 mikes. Record this to 2 mono tracks in Sonar. Sit in the chair and play the drums on the arms kick/snare. Now drag those tracks to a midi track and Melodyn will create a midi track of your drumming, A pour mans digital drum kit.

So, in EZDrummer, there is actually a place in the software that I can set things like Time signature and tempo. I can not find the place to do that in AD2. Adjusting the project tempo does not effect AD2 at all. Not sure if I am missing something, but I tried last night in Stand alone and as a plug in and cannot seem to adjust tempo at all... has anyone done this???

There should be a setting somewhere in AD to "follow project tempo." I'm not at my DAW today, so can't confirm exactly where it is. Once that is checked, AD will automatically adjust to its host's tempo. It's really handy if you're auditioning beats, since each pattern is set to reflect the speed you want the drummer playing to.

another suggestion --> video tutorials in the CW Shop you can buy videos from Craig Anderton, SWA, Groove3, & others that help you with ALL kinds of stuff to learn, however, since you're more focused on Addictive Drums 2, it's why I suggest to go to Groove3's website & pay only $10 (normally $15) for a '30-Day All Access' to watch: 1) Addictive Drums 2 Explained (1hr 46min 9sec) 2) Addictive Drums 2 Advanced Vol 1 (1hr 35min 32sec) 3) Addictive Drums 2 Advanced Vol 2 (1hr 27min 41sec) then, if you want, watch others to help with Sonar, Melodyne, or anything else related to what you want to accomplish p.s. I've only seen the 'Explained' (last summer) & now I'm ready to attempt to learn more with the other 2

As far as tempo goes, you will see it's very easy to adjust it in the control bar window. It'll say 120 and clicking in that little window will allow you to use the + and - buttons or highlight the 120 and type in what you do want. Do it at the very beginning otherwise you'll get 120 changing to the new tempo. You can change the time signature there, too and the key if that matters to you. Ditto on the Groove 3 suggestion, too. I've learned tons of exactly what I wanted to know, from subscribing to their All Access Pass for the past 4 years. Once you get past the first stages and have AD2 working and are using it, you'll discover how useful and open ended it is. Especially the beat transformer! You can make a pattern play harder or softer, mute whatever, mix it up or down, adjust the bar length and then drag that into your song/project. Get that far and you can start customizing the fills, or as mentioned above rewriting the bars where you want fills. It's very flexible! Best of luck! You'll get all the help you need here and Groove 3 is a huge resource, too. ...and don't hang yourself up on the midi part at all. It's really more about finding a pattern you like and tweaking it, then dragging it into your drum track. EZPZ Michael
