Sonar & Tascam turnkey recording solution

Someone mentioned the other day that 3 years with Gibson and there hadn't been any cooperative projects bringing products to market.

New post on Mike Rivers - Useful Audio Stuff

2017 NAMM Show Tidbits – Day 2
by mikeriversaudio
From the introduction of the cassette-based Portastudio, TASCAM has maintained a strong product line of integrated recording and mixing systems. This show they introduced Track Factory, which could be the next generation after the digital Portastudios. a complete system-engineered and turnkey computer-based music production system. The package includes a TASCAM US-2x2 interface, along with an Intel NUC (Next Unit Computing) tiny computer , plus a TASCAM TM-80 mic and TH-02 headphones. The computer, with a 2.7 GHz i5 CPU with 4 GM of RAM and a 256 GB solid state disk drive. Cakewalk’s Sonar Professional is pre-installed and the operating system is optimized for audio by PC Audio Labs, a well respected supplier of turnkey music computers. It includes a keyboard and mouse, but you’ll need monitor speakers and a video monitor in order to complete the system. Target price is $1300, which, when adding up street prices of all the pieces, means that you’re paying about $250 for the integration and packaging, but for that you don’t just get a ready-to-play recording system, but one that’s expandable as your needs grow.

I like the look of it and it'd interesting to see if you can buy the NUC on it's own.

Seems odd they didn't actually make it as an all in one unit?
Now that would get my attention.
In other words, it's just a package of off the shelf components, fine.
But wouldn't a box that contained both the CPU, software and the interface be actually something innovative?
They could do away with using USB that way and get RTL way down there.
And then there could be a laptop version as well. A true porta studio.

The concept is good, especially for those who wants "Sonar compatible" system. If that really works well, that can be a solution for several thread like "I have just made a gaming pc and now Sonar crash all the time, also in all my records I hear several helicopters"

But as Bapu foreseen:
A bit childish advertisement... if that man can not mechanically connect M-Audio Fast Track Pro to desktop's USB, how he is going to connect US 2x2  to this tiny box ?

Orange Amps already went to market with a computer/interface/DAW box years ago. Just Google it.

As for the package in this thread. 4 gigs of RAM doesn't seem like the place they should have skimped out on for a recording PC. Look at how much the OS takes even without running any real programs and it should be obvious the leftovers are insufficient for even fairly basic recording and effects

lol, the advertisement is reminiscent of the slap-chop infomercial. So, does this come with all the wires plugged in? It looks really hard to plug in things based on the ad, so I hope this is already plugged in.

Seriously though, regardless of the actual specs of the machine and whatnot, I personally find this kind of 'hey here's a product for you DOOFUS!' type of advertising pretty insulting.

The PC has Sonar all pre loaded and configured along with OS by PC Audio labs who I believe supply the PCs for Cakewalk.

The review in the OP mention 4GB, Tascam site 8GB: http://www.tascam.com/news/display/12606/

I use 4GB myself... 1-2 modern synth tracks and "game is over". Without swap (obviously jitter generator when on), more that one is always looking for "Out of memory" trouble.

Without previous experience or someone showing you how to set things up and configure it, realistically you average person is going to get frustrated with the process.

I've been recording with Computers and DAWs for over 20 years, and even when I got the newer Tascam 2x2 (which comes with this product), I couldn't get Sonar to recognize it on my Laptop for a backup mobile type of rig without asking some questions here on the forum.  (and this is a product that even comes bundled with a low end version of Sonar - so if anything should work without a hickup, it should be that).

I totally understand that. I guess my point is that doesn't make you a bumbling fool. I'm not really trying to bash the product more the advertising technique. This certainly isn't the only company or product using it though, by all means. I also assume that most of us already have computers and interfaces. By no means do I mean to dissuade anyone from checking this out.

Re: Sonar & Tascam turnkey recording solution 2017/01/24 01:24:16 (permalink)
It has 8 GB of RAM. Mike Rivers does his research and rarely gets a spec wrong, so he may have been given an incorrect spec...or someone confused the 3 GB cache spec or something. Or it could have been a typo, given that it says "4 GM."

FWIW the NUC is not an off-the-shelf computer, it's quite customized. Actually that's the whole point of the NUC...it can be customized for particular tasks. That's why Intel makes so many variations on the concept available, and then companies like PC Audio Labs can take that even further. As far as the black-and-white insert in the video goes...humor doesn't always translate, which is why it's always safest to avoid humor. At least on the net we have smilies to indicate "humor alert."
