Drum Map Tip

Hello Everyone,

I just realized a really cool tip with drum maps.  If this common-knowledge I apologize, but I always used to use 1 drum map with 1 midi track pointing to it.  Seems simple enough, but I always found it difficult sometimes to work with ALL the drum sounds in one track (even though that is what Drum Maps are meant for).

What I always wanted to do is work on some more complex percussion parts in the step sequencer, but make sure I don't mess with other parts like kick/snare/hats, or sometimes I want to make the step sequencer a different amount of steps or beats than the kick and snare for poly-rhythms.

It just dawned on me that I can make a 2nd MIDI track and point it to the SAME drum map!

So now I have my basic stuff (kick/snare) stuff one ONE midi track, and then a SECOND or THIRD Midi track where I can program percussive parts!

Another useful benefit is, lets say you are programming a 32-step beat... and your hat has a constant pattern (but not one easily definable with the "Fill every x" option, well instead of hitting in each one for 32 steps, you can do it for just 4 or 8 steps (depending on the pattern), loop that across, and then on the other track.

So now in my track view, I have 3 MIDI Tracks all routed to the same drum map:

1.  Core (Kick/Snare)
2.  Hats
3.  Percussion

Works for me, I am not sure how useful I am making this out to be, but it has saved me cycles!

I do something similar but I have one midi track that is basic beat, and the one below it is fills.  Both use drum map for either Addictive Drums or EZ drummer.  Just a nice way to keep things in the drum world organized.

It's a helpful trick.
I'll also have a separate MIDI track for a drum that is going to change dynamically.  For example, if I have a snare that's going to be soft in some places, hard in others, and perhaps a long "build up," I'll program the snare hits, and then put a Velocity Envelope on that MIDI track to gradually increase the notes as needed.  It's much easier than having to address each hit individually, and since theyre feeding the same drum synth it sounds cohesive.

Don't forget you can also use the one drum map to address as many drum/percussion vsti's as you want - just change the output destination(s) in the map.
