How do I make notes snap to a specified duration as I enter them in Staff View?

I'm using Sonar Platinum.

I know I can quantize notes after the fact, but if I'm entering four quarter notes in 4/4, there should be a way to have them land directly on four quarter notes as I enter them.

I already have "Snap" set to "to" and turned on. I thought it should be that simple, but evidently, it isn't.

I'm a long-time Sonar user, but updated to Platinum from Sonar 8.5 where this sort of thing was never an issue.

Snap to Grid in the Staff View stopped functioning as expected in SONAR X2 and has continued through SONAR X3 into the current SONAR Platinum series.

When you first open the Staff View, Snap to Grid appears to follow the global snap setting.  Then the grid changes to 32nd note (120 ticks) divisions as soon as you begin editing.  Essentially, you have to assume that Snap to Grid is permanently set to 32nd notes.

I have been unable to discover a workaround for the problem.

Sorry to not be more help,

OK. Thanks for letting me know.

At least now I know I'm not just missing some setting buried in a menu somewhere.

Well.... maybe, maybe not. With all the changes you never know anymore. Read up on the Platinum Staff View in detail online and help files before writing it off. I don't use Staff View but other views and functions have been changed like that.

I can't even find a help file for Staff View in Platinum. The only article I could find about Staff View was for an earlier version.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, SONAR does not actually function as described in those help files.

In reality, using Shift with Left or Right arrow only works sometimes. And even then, if I click on the Now time with a half note, it may be off by a 16th or a 32nd.

Even if SONAR did function precisely as those help files describe, it's much more tedious to stop between each note to advance the Now time to the precise spot I want to enter the note.

In SONAR 8.5, I could simply hit 4 for quarter note, then enter a string of quarter notes. Every note was placed at the correct time. If I want a dotted eighth note, I could hit 8, then a period, and it would put notes either directly on the beat or precisely at 480 ticks if I clicked in between. Now it's anyone's guess where a note will land regardless of whether the Now time is correct or not.

Changing from one note duration to another also takes more time. There are a few shortcuts, but those use Ctrl-Shift. Even the drop down menu to select note values is over complicated. You have to RIGHT click it rather than left click, even though every other menu in the program opens with a left click. It's ridiculous.

Although i feel this isn't the actual case, it sure seems like Cakewalk did everything possible to discourage anyone from using Staff View any more. So if it wasn't deliberate, the only other answer is incompetence. How else can you explain taking a function that worked great in a previous version of the program and totally breaking it in more recent versions?

There's been much discussion about STAFF View here in the past. Most users are frustrated with it. I don't use it but am always baffled when a perfectly good routine is changed to something less intuitive. At least you can drag the clips into 8.5 for those parts and then drag them back into SPLAT, if you wanna go that route. And then hope SPLAT won't mess with them.
