grouping issue.

I have been struggling with this issue for a few hours and I'm at my wits end.
The short story is, I've been reworking an old project and I have two instrument tracks that are grouped. When I press the solo or mute button for one track, the corresponding button on the other track is also pressed. When I automate something like volume in one track, the corresponding lane gets automated in the other track. I've looked at the documentation and tried everything that it suggests (remove from group for the track as well as the control button) and nothing seems to work. It's driving me absolutely crazy. Can someone suggest something that isn't one of those two things? Thank you.
