No recorded sound

I am trying to record a vocal on an audio track.  The mic is live as I sing as shown by the track in the inspector after my having clicked the red recording dot for that track, and the red dot also shows in the inspector.  I press R on the keyboard to record and the meter is jumping.  So it seems as though it is recording, but no sound gets laid down on the track.

I'I m using Sonar X3....tried both 32 and 64 bit.  Any ideas as to what I might be missing?  Thanks.

Check your routing to the track.
then make sure your soundcard is hooked up properly.
What are you using for a soundcard (This should be the first thing you write in the OP).

    Windows 8.1 X64 Sonar Platinum x64
    Custom built: Asrock z97 1150 - Intel I7 4790k - 16GB corsair DDR3 1600 - PNY SSD 220GB

And make sure you don't have the auto punch in engaged for somewhere else in the timeline.
That one catches me all the time.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions.  And Cactus, you nailed it!  Although I had already discovered that after going to preferences and saw that enabled, and wondered if that could be the culprit.  Then I saw your post after I came back here to explain how it had been solved.  Now I can get back to work.  Great to have this support....thanks again.......Don
