If that is a banjo line (on the left) it's a bit too loud IMO.

Toms in the into seems a bit too boomy/loud.

Interesting bass line and tone for a ballad. I was not sure about it as it started but it grew on me. I would give it a bit more bottom though.

Great vocals. Kind if reminds me of Harry Chapin (and that's a good thing).

    Overall a fine job.

Agree with Ed about the banjo or muted strings, may be a bit overbearing in spots. Might try a bit of compression on it.
The drums might have a bit more presence.
Otherwise, I love your vocals, sound REALLY good.
    Nice guitar work, too.
    I liked it a lot!

This is a fine song with good words and good vocals.  As the others have said, perhaps the synth strings and banjo could be dialed back a little, which would let the other elements of the mix shine.  Overall, this is really very close to a terrific mix and a little more polish would take it over the top.

    All the best,

Thanks all!  The plucking you're hearing is a Dimension cello synth called full pizzicato and I boosted the mids (800hz) way too much so I will eliminate that and see if that flows better.  I'm just now getting into the synth stuff so I'm really diggin it, maybe too much.  I'll look at the toms as well..

I won't repeat what others I have said and look forward to the revised mix. The song itself has a good arrangement with nice lyrics and the guitar work ain't half bad

Good song liked it overall but same as above found the strings way to loud and they seemed to drown out the guitar solo.  What I might try is a poly synth, a little sparkle instead of the gloomy Cello to give it a interesting sound scape. I call those things ear candy. Little things in the background that are on your peripheral hearing.  Strings are overdone on too many songs for my likes.
Other comment is there's something that occasionally seems out of time. Like a random kick or snare roll? Something is not grooving with the song.  Just a few spots. example going into chorus 1;16

    Tom,

Very nice song! I think you mostly pulled off what you were striving for. Mix could be a little better, but it isn't far off. As Ed suggested, more bass would help round the bottom out. The acoustic guitars sound just a tad brittle. Might be EQ, might be how they were recorded. The pizzicato cellos sound nothing like cellos, but I can hear where you were headed. Honestly, blend them with the strings and I think they'll sit better.

    Regards,
    Dan

Well, here's the new mix.  Made some timing changes with the bass & snare.  Beefed up the bass a bit (200HZ) and took some 4600 HZ off the acoustic guitar.  I did a little bit of mastering by boosting the mid range a bit as well.  Teh spectrum showed a dip in that range.
    Thanks!

Well now the bass is to far forward.
And there is still something in the timing of the instruments I can't put my finger on. It shows now the bass is loud.
It's like you've quantizied using triplets on some parts and 1/16 on others??
Like at 44, the snare hits with a push but the bass is late. Listening a little more I think it is that the bass does not groove with the drums.. Your very close and it's a good song well worth perfecting.

What I'd do is put the Bass and the drum midi tracks side by side in track view.
Now expand them and zoom in using the Now Time to see what lines up. It might be as simple as just a dozen notes that are out of sync.
The out of sync timing thing happens all the time for me as a result of quantizing moving a note as I say to the 1/16 line when it belonged in a Triplet placement.

I like how your lead vocal slides around rhythmically - some nice phrasing here. I liked the middle section where you swing it, and then return it to the straight four.

So it all seems pretty "live" to me, like real players having a go all at once. Consequently I might expect the odd timing issue, for example right at 4:00, your background vocal comes in just a tad early? Maybe worth a check.

I really like the laid back feel of the song, and it definitely has a hook.

Have your tried completely removing the strings? Maybe swap them for a B3 organ?

Thanks!  Man.. I've been through the bass drum thing already.  I quantize 1/16.  That might be part of the problem.. I'll check again.  I really like the cellos so that's not something I would change.  I could however try a new synth.

Okay, I think I got it!  I used the original bass track and lined it up better with the drums and I nudged that background vocal at 4:00 to its proper place.
    Thanks again!

Cool song...  I liked it.   Sounds very live here, and for me it suits the song.   While I'm not overly crazy about the pizz on the left, they weren't overbearing and do balance the sustained strings on the right.    Guitars all sound great.
