Johnny and Mary

This is my cover of the Robert Palmer song released in 1980. I've always liked Robert's stuff but I hadn't heard this one until about a month ago, and it spoke to me so strongly I thought I'd give it a try myself. Appreciate any comments, pos or neg.

Yes, I did it all. Addictive Drums, Dimension Pro, Rapture. Just the stuff that comes with SONAR. I'm usually big on background vocals, but this time I didn't see a place for them. Thanks, guys!

Great job on this Larry! I vaguely remember the original, but in any case, I like what you did with this. Mix is pretty good as well and has an authentic retro sound.

I love this, Larry.  If you don't mind me saying so, your voice reminds me of Bowie.  I can't wait to hear it again.

Always loved this song, nice to hear someone covering it. Lead vocal is a little out front for me, and seems to need some backing vocals to support it.

Dan - Thanks! Retro is my middle name.
Andy - Glad you spotted a "vocal style," although I don't know what it is.
Lynn - I have always been the go-to singer in cover bands when we did Bowie songs. I guess I see why now. Glad you like the recording.
James - I get it about the vocal being out front. I struggled with it when mixing, especially at the beginning of the song. Maybe I'll remix and pull it back. But I'm curious where you (and others) think background vocals would fit in here. Or is that just everyone's way of saying the lead vocal needs help?
Daryl - Thank you. Have you heard this version? It's haunting.

Well, I like it anyway, so easy to listen to... Not strained and sounds like you are happy with what you do

I don't think I've ever heard the song before, but it has a great early 80's vibe!   From the synths to the clean/compressed guitar and the overall reverb.    Loved the vocals - a bit of that Bowie vibe and a lot of clarity in the lower range.

Mark - Glad you liked it. Thanks! (I'm not prolific, but I'll be back, looking for more help from the community.)
Andy - Happy with what I do... still trying for that.
SteveC - Haven't been back in a while - missed your comment, but thank you so much for your insight. Because it's "only" a cover, technical comments are meaningful to me.

Only listening on my lappy speakers so.........

FWIW on here it all sounds pretty well balanced other than the vox could maybe sit back in the mix a little more.

I think I actually preferred Bryan Ferry's version over the original, this seems to have a bit of both about it, with a smidge of Bowie too ....... some very cool company you're keeping there!

Nice cover of a great song. I like it. The drums are a bit wet for my taste, but that's just me.
Anyone ever notice the hum on the original ? I always wondered if that was intentional.
