Yikes!  You had me going off to check on our Manila server and clients (who are off today).  From the USGS website it looks like the quake hit on the east side and our staff are on the west.  So it looks like we're all good (from an IT perspective anyway), I was able to log in and everything appeared up.

Glad you made it through with only a small inconvenience Dave!

Last day on the island. Sheesh, that went by fast.

Tomorrow we drive to Manila, an all-day journey, spend the night there and then take off for Seattle by way of Tokyo, another all-day journey. We'll buy junk at the airport for triple the normal price just to get rid of our excess pesos, have one last halo-halo in the airport restaurant, and then sadly wave farewell to our island paradise from our window seats. And immediately start planning next year's trip.

My granddaughter is till trying to figure out how it is we can leave on Friday at 9:45 AM and arrive on Friday at 9:45 AM. I said, "you know how when you call your cousin in Denver it's an hour later there? Well, it's like that." I don't think my explanation helped much.

Best of all, for the first time in 25 years, I leave uninjured. Knock on coconut.

Maybe you can get Bubba to explain it for her?

The new (temporary) Mayor of the Philippines is a lunatic who hates Americans (we evidently rejected is travel VISA when he wanted to visit his girlfriend going to school here).  He's already personally executed three people on the streets because he claimed they were drug dealers.  At least one is simply thought to have had weed on him for his own personal use.

Since Dave smokes legally in Washington, well, you should now have enough of the picture.

Re: Outa Here 2017/02/17 18:15:44 (permalink)
Just rolled in...46 hours, 16 timezones, including the worst traffic in the world. Incredibly, Manila traffic has actually improved with the completion of light rail - only 4 hours for a north-south traversal, which would have been at least 6 hours back in the 90's. Of course, it wasn't rush hour. Flight delays for bad weather. Given that it's normally a roller-coaster ride coming into and leaving Tokyo anyway it's just as well we waited out the high winds. As it was, only the first 2 hours of the Tokyo-Seattle leg was a lose-yer-lunch white-knuckle carnival ride. I've had worse.

7 weeks now, drug-free. My head is clear and I no longer crave truck tacos. 3 weeks of country air, swimming, fish, rice and veggies. I'm a new man. So you better believe I'm lighting up a doobie tonight, and might even go snag a taco since the chicken salad left in the fridge 3 weeks ago is looking a little suspect.

Still waiting on that welcome-home doobie...decided a taco wouldn't do it and instead went out to a proper sit-down restaurant for a giant chile relleno combo platter. Dead tired, barely able to keep my eyes open, going out was a way to stay awake a little longer in hopes of getting back in sync with PST.

The strategy failed spectacularly. Instead of the relaxing J and falling asleep to DSoM as planned, I instead got the worst case of food poisoning I've ever experienced and stayed up all night in excruciating gastronomical agony. I have never wanted sleep so badly. All I could think about was that I never did get around to writing a will.

Better now, I think. I didn't eat anything Saturday except saltines and water, finally passed out around 5:00 PM. woke up at 2:00 AM today feeling like I'd been run over by a jeepney. Still no appetite, but I'm optimistic that'll change once I finally roll that long-awaited marijuana cigarette tonight...

Not the homecoming you were hoping for, Dave. Hope you're feeling better. Once when I was in your shoes, a nurse told me to sip Gatorade when nothing else would stay down. Something about keeping your electrolytes in balance. Anyway, it helped a little. . . .

Food poisoning is awful. I had a serious case many years ago and for two days I was so dizzy I could not even get up to reach the remote for the TV, which was stuck on a local news channel. I lay there in delirium listening to the same news reports over and over. Couldn't hold anything down - no food or water. On the second day I had this intense urge for Haribo candy - everything else made me wretch just to think about it. So I almost crawled to the store and bought some. Literally 10 minutes later, I was totally cured.

Had to google "Haribo candy" to find out it's Gummibären. At least, that's what it was called the last time I ate some (1972, Munich, Germany; motivation:Turkish Plate).

Back in the UK a popular stoner snack is the Haribo "Tangfastics," some of the sourest candy you'll ever experience. I tried in vain to find it here in the US for years before giving up. And then I read that sour candy like this is so bad for your teeth you might as well swish battery acid. So I'm kinda glad I can't buy it any more.

I'm into Altoids. I keep a can of each flavor in the nightstand drawer to keep the munchies at bay. I like them because it's really not possible to O.D. on them. Or, if you do, you only do it once.

In related news: Man Eats Half a Tin of Altoids

Flagstaff, AZ – While drinking heavily Thursday night, area man Grant Bullock munched down the remaining Altoids in a tin that witnesses described as “at least half full” in one mouthful, astonishing onlookers.  Bullock explained that the action was necessary, as he needed a receptacle for the marijuana he received from his good friend Chester Reinhart.

This is why I don't drink. It's an invitation to bad decisions, many of them far worse than eating too many Altoids. How many miserable marriages, broken limbs, icky infections and skyrocketing car-insurance premiums began with "a night of heavy drinking"?

Everybody knows you save those empty Altoid cans in anticipation of just this need. They not only keep your weed fresh and dry, but also give it a fresh minty aroma.

I visited my first dispensary yesterday. I was so happy that I cried. Later on I ate a family size bag of dill pickle chips. I was so sick I cried. It would seem balance is the key.

The chips are gone and replaced with celery sticks and carrots. With any luck the dispensary will be there when I return.

It's a pity camera film isn't so much of a thing these days because those plastic camera film canisters were perfect for carrying small amounts of stash on the go. I used them all throughout the 90's, and picked the idea up from my dad and his friends who would keep their hashish in them in the 1970's.

I don't smoke any more except once in a blue moon I'll get some, and if it lasts me the course of a week I will very easily put on 5lbs during that time. Celery sticks and carrots don't cut it for my munchies unless I'm dipping them in hummus, in which case the entire hub of hummus is devoured in one sitting. In fact anything that gets opened is devoured in one go. Entire loaves of bread with entire jars of Marmite, entire boxes of cereal (if it's chocolate flavored I will quite happily eat two boxes), and my "medicinal" bars of dark chocolate, of which I will usually only eat 2 or 3 squares a day, will be inhaled in a matter of seconds. It really is the darndest thing how easy it is to vacuum up every last tasty morsel in sight when you're stoned, especially if you're not a regular stoner. I will literally prowl the kitchen like a predator hunting for prey. It has to be quick, easy and tasty. Salads are out, too much chopping.

Photocopy a bunch of daily vitamins, then glue the image inside a clear photo film holder (or actual vitamin holder).  Then it looks like you're just one of those health-nuts that takes too many supplements.

I think I've also seen some clever modern-day versions of the 'ol fake mayo jar in the fridge that you hide valuables in.
