Hmm i have a UB2442 fx pro. What i do it from channels one to eight i have gates and compression in the inserts of those channels for kick snare and toms.
I use the 8 direct outs from those channels and from channel 9 to 16 i use the 8 submix outputs.Giving me total of 16 line outs. What i do is pre mix the drums before recording them to reduce time in the program you use.If you have an
8 I/O interface then the input list would be
    1.K,SN,R1+2,R3+4,HiHat,OH Left,OH Center,OH Right
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 channel used
    2. K,SN,R1+2,R3,R4,HH,OHL,OHR
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 channel

4 I/O interface this where panning comes into play.
    Buss 1-2 Kick Racks 1-4 Buss 3-4 OH L OH R
    Center 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock
Kick and Toms for the most part are in uniform with each other tone wise.
    Hope this helps...

Computer these days is getting faster these days.Programs these days are mostly being made for PC's are getting better.
Windows XP Pro Edition is good to run if you have SONAR 3 or 4,Sound Forge,CubasE SL,SX,SE ACID PRO 5.0 PRO TOOLS LE etc...
    1.2 GHz
1,024 ram to be on the safe side but 512 is good enough.
Intel P4 PC's are slowly coming down in price.Watch for the rebates..
2 hard drives would be good to have
i.e C drive would have on it SONAR,CUBASE what ever programs you have plus Windows XP of course.

D Drive would be only used to put your WAV,MP3's,AIFF etc.Plus sessions.
80 gigs for each drive should be good for you.
Go to a guitar center or samash and ask what systems they run at home.
Less stuff you have running in the background of your machine the smoother things would run.
    Good luck
