Lavender Sea

This is a collaboration between myself and Kelly Chadbourne. Kelly had the basic idea and sent me a vocal of her simply singing to a melody in her head. I think she used Audacity and a usb mic.
I had to do some extensive editing to make her voice fit the grid and bring her vocals out.
 I added the rest.
Mixed in Sonar, mastered in SO.

Tim,

Very nice production.  That must have been quite an undertaking to match up a vocal only track to a yet to be constructed backing track.  Great work.

Very nice! Impressed how you created a song around just a vocal track.

At 1:43 the vocals come in a bit unatural. Probably easy fixed with a small fade in.

Good job!

Hiya Tim, a great song this. Well done to Kelly for that. A real tallent there.

Knowing how you had to bring in a pre-made vocal track, to then mould your "backing track" around that and come up with the end result is a testament to your skills, for sure.

Altogether an excellent piece of work

cheers

I agree with what Wookie said; very sympathetic accompaniment. In the intro, there is a burst from what sounds like a limiter/compressor pulling up nothing but noise. I'd either gate that or bring it into a wave editor and mute it and do a very short fade in before the first note. After that, the mix is great...

Daryl1968- Thanks for listening and liking/reposting!

Biodiode- Thank you sir.

eph221- Thank you much!

markno999 - To answer your question. It was kinda funny, every time she took breaths it threw her out of time on the original track. If I took out the breaths most of the timing was pretty close. Melodyne really came in handy here.
It didn't help that I recorded the harp as audio, so I  ended up editing the harp in audio.

Lynn- Thank you sir!

Kloon- I'll look at that. I probably missed it. Thanks!

Wookie - Thanks for listening sir!

Andy- It was a challenge for me. I hoping we can get some kind of system that is easier to do. Kelly has a great ability for lyrics and singing.Thank you!

Dan- There seems to be some kind of thing going on with soundcloud. I had it happen once before and I double checked my master and it wasn't there. Re exported and it wasn't there. I'm uploading 24/48 and it's converting to 128 mp3 online. I dunno. I also had a click or two that went away when I did that. I'll listen to that upload again.

I wanted to ask you a question. A few others have used the term harsh when referring to her vocals. I listened today in my car and that's the only place where I might call the vox slightly "edgy". As you know the listening gear has a lot to do with it. The vocal is especially present in this mix. Does it seem as if it needs a rolloff to you? Thanks!

I did not notice anything like that and I'm listening on some very good IEM's with very detailed high end. I would have said something had I heard that. You can tell that the mic she used isn't "top of the line", but it is pretty darn good and captured her voice quite well.

Hey Tim, it must have been quite a job pulling this all together having started with just an unclocked vocal, but you did quite a fine job of it.  The finished product is a pleasure to listen to.

Phil-Thank you kindly sir.

Dan- Maybe this is the issue. I'm hearing the personality of that mic. I think it's a CAD usb. Makes me feel much better about it. A few on another board commented . I didn't necessarily hear it although I agreed it could be trimmed a bit. Going too far the other way though and you loose the presence. THANK YOU.

Nice job, Tim...   Forming an arrangement around something as fluid as this aint easy, but I think you did a fantastic job.  The music + vocals fit naturally together.  If you hadn't mentioned, I doubt anyone here would have been the wiser.

As far as harshness goes, I think I'm also hearing the signal chain and not the voice.   Your arrangement is so smooth that even a little isn't being masked.   No biggie though, it still sounds good and more important, has the emotion intact.
