When people believe the locus of control is external to themselves, they more readily accept and endorse these wildly illogical ideas. These endorsements are something they can control, and indeed, author.
 
That said, 
 
just because they're paranoid, doesn't mean they're wrong!

It IS about power and control.  We grossly overstate and  over -believe our value to the collective.  The system is a machine, and  the structure is the  identity.  The identity gets f-'d up and does the paranoia thing as a way to reharness control from  the  machine.  The mistake is to think that WE ARE the machine.  Machines (systems)are neither moral nor amoral but people are therefore we try to personify the machines in order to control them  They aren't persons at all.  Nature is like a system as well.  Nature *the real* doesn't preach like all systems don't preach, it's like a machine.  We  re-assert our control over any system with symbolism and imagination.
