Long static pops?

Sounds like when a cable is bad (but not my case), i'm hearing from time to time a long static interference when recording and sometimes when listening back. Have my buffer set at 512.

Have you used resplendant's latency monitor to check your machine?

It makes sense to rule that out first.

Thanks. I did just download the monitor and all was well.

Next, are you live recording when it happens or does it happen when mixing.

I'm wondering if we can exclude external hardware.

I agree with the above. Rule out external hardware, other USB devices, mobile phones etc. It sounds like you are suffering from interference, but there is not really enough information to go on..

is your internet connection a wireless set up ?
Turn it off in device manager and re-test.

It happens both ways. I could record a section, the shorted out wire hissing sound happens, and it wouldn't even be recorded. Just annoying. Some pops have recorded at times. Also same with listening back. My internet connection is ethernet. It has wireless capability. Maybe I should still turn it off in device manager, (or is that taken care of when I'm hard wired?)

Re: Long static pops? 2017/03/18 13:59:55 (permalink)
it depends if you have a wireless connection on that PC, even though you are hard wired, it wont matter, it will still cause interference. if you go in to device manager under connections you will see it if there is a wireless connection.
This has happened to me before and it does sound like a classic case of interference.
If its a grounding issue then try plugging all your gear in to 1 outlet. this will avoid using 2 power sources on different breakers which is always a problem with grounding.

However it could be buffer rate is low, possibly a bad USB cable or even a bad USB port.

Ill share a story with you,
2 years ago I had this god awful crackling going on and it miffed me beyond belief.
It turned out that I had been connecting and disconnecting my Audio interface/soundcard to the front USB hub in my PC front panel. After doing this 90000 times, I wore the USB port out.
So it was making a connection but not a total connection. So I reinstalled the drivers and used the second port (right next to it) and never had another problem.

However now I use a power conditioner to shut all my audio gear down at once. (1 switch turns on speakers and soundcard). So a cautionary tale about wearing out USB ports. it happens.

It can be frustrating no doubt figuring these things out but here it is...
Break it down to simplicity, start ruling things out 1 by 1. cords, wireless, ports, power adapters for gear. sooner later you will find it. lets just hope it is sooner than later

Re: Long static pops? 2017/03/19 21:35:25 (permalink)
What I'm discovering is that the scratching static popping sounds are happening with any movement of the mouse, while recording or even recording vocals, etc when at 258 buffer size. When i increase the buffer to 512, it stops but the delayed latency will be a problem. In preferences there is no middle as I am using asio. I have a focusrite 6i6 audio interface. Syncing and caching are also set at whatever i set the buffer rate at. They allow plus and minus buffer settings, but I'm not sure where they can set at other than what the device is set to. I also disabled my network adapter and swithced usb ports in back. Cables are fine. My other songs don't have this problem as they don't have as many effects. I'm only using 4 plugins on 6 different trax. Using up 24 tracks as well

Ah. And a high-frequency whine, too?
That's a digital ground loop. Your interface and your computer have separate ground connections.
I have this ever since I got a Roland OctaCapture.

Nothing to do with plug-ins, buffer sizes or the like.

The solution is a bit more difficult.

Do you have monitors connected or are you using headphones?
What happens if you disconnect your speakers completely and only listen on headphones?
Is it still there?

AHA! This happened to me once. I have a logitec mouse and the driver that Windows installed for it caused a click.

Switching to the official Logitec driver fixed my issue. I had to download it from the vender.

gswitz is on to something. I had a similar issue with a wireless Logitech mouse as well.
Try another mouse as a test.

PS- you change the buffer rate for your Focusrite in the devices tab in preferences.
there is a rectangular box you click to open up a separate pop up screen with buffer / Asio buffer rate.

If it's a bad mouse, it should have caused an issue with the Latency Monitor. That assumes you let your mouse go quiet and then started using it again.

Re: Long static pops? 2017/03/20 13:13:05 (permalink)
It turns out I have no problems in any other project. This project gave me problems when trying to open it from the start screen. It would crash. So I had to open it up from within another open project. Once I bundled it, I saved it as project once again and now I can at least open it from start screen. However, it may be corrupted somehow still enough to cause this scratching pops when recording a vocal track. I do have 24 tracks going, but I have 22 in another which gives me no problems. I don't want to scrap the song because I worked hard and everything is done but the vocals. I've been looking for a way to start a new project and import one by one the tracks from the problem song until I've maybe found a possible problem track or eliminate the corrupted whatever by a fresh start. Is there a way to import tracks from one project into another? Or by everything I just explained do you have a possible solution? I can eliminate the problem if I want to deal with high latency of 1024!

I personally never use Bundle files (if that's what you meant by "Once I bundled it, I saved it as project").
I have had issues with Bun files in the past.
Now on to trying to fix it, you can open it in safe mode by holding down SHIFT and opening the project.
You will be presented with a window to load plug ins / this will help you find an offender if it is a plug in causing it (possibly a high latency plug in) or a plug in that's just causing issues.

I typically make sure all my tracks are "Bounced to clips" so all tracks are 1 full track and not 10 little clips making up 1 track. try to get them to line up (this makes it easier to import to a new project).
Drag all the tracks at once to the Browser (create a sub directory where you know where it is).
you can also drag 1 at a time to give them a custom name if you so choose.
Now you can import them one by one by dragging them from that folder to a new project.

you might be able to save the current project as a project template. this way everything is all set for the new project. however it could be a corrupt project and saving a corrupt project as a template would be a big No for me.

Something similar happened to me on a specific project. Moving the mouse was causing huge static pops.
I toggled every plugin on and off and found the issue. For me it was an instance of TH3 causing it. Deleted the plugin, saved the project and re-inserted TH3. It fixed the problem.
