Wasting Away - Original Instrumental

Hey everybody, I am back after finishing another rock instrumental.

https://soundcloud.com/fendicator/wasting-away-03

I need some fresh ears on this one to help me make sure it sounds
good and is ready to go for an album.

Any and all feedback, critique and suggestions are welcome.

Just two "if it were me" things...   When the guitars are really kicking the drums can get a little lost.  And I'd try a different tone for the lead, something that stands out more from the crunchiness on the sides.   Otherwise it seems like a good foundation.

It's a great foundation, but I don't hear a finished product here.  Drums need a lot of work to sound finished.  Not sure if it's because of these computer speakers but I didn't really hear any bass line either.  The guitars were really good and the song structure was interesting.  I really like it.

Thanks for the replies, Stevec, I have thought about changing the lead tone to help separate it from the rhythm. I will have to dick around with amplitube 4 and see what I can come up with if anything.

Voda, I hear yeah on the drums. Just not sure what to do to help give the more life. It's EZDrummer 2, Metal machine. There all routed out to there own track with a little EQ and compression. Not sure where to go from there, may have to jump on youtube and do some research.

That's an interesting mix of guitars, I think it works. Drums are getting lost, but that's due to plenty of guitar volume. Maybe sacrifice some guitar parts' volume for the sake of the drums. Perhaps you don't really want three different guitar parts at once? Four? These are the decisions.

Maybe there's a reason why Rush is only three guys.

You have a high-pitched resonance thing going around at 2:35 or so, might be worth looking into.

    Your guitar work is primo.

    cheers,
    -Tom

I think the chorused stereo guitars should be used throughout and keep the lead distorted. That would add more separation to the parts.

Man, I hear you.  Drums are the hardest thing to get right, in my humbled opinion.  I never spent more time on any other instrument than synth drum programming - the initial sound is there, but the realism and feel is a challenge. Now, I'm recording live acoustic drums, so the realism is there, but the sound quality is just so effin hard to get...if it's not one thing, it's another.

    Good luck!

Put triggers on your real drums to drive samples. Best of both worlds.

I really like this and I think it stands on its own... No vocals required IMO.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys.

Emerald, there are 2 guitar parts happening during the main distorted parts along with the lead. The original chord I had did not sound very good to me so I split the chord up. A and D strings are the chord with the G string on its own kinda in the background, 4 db less then the chords. I think the high pitch issues is my poor playing technique lol I will look into it.

Dcumpian, I have never been able to get a solid chorus over distortion with out running into issues. I may mess around with it some more though.

Synkrotron, Thanks, glad you enjoyed my music :). Considering Metallica has been a big inspiration for me, I have no problem at all with that reference. I feel like my sound comes from Metallica and Nintendo games lol.
