Pro Jam Session tonight in Woodland Hills, CA

For all you musicians out in Los Angeles, and the San Fernando Valley especially:

There's a fun jam session I'm in the house band for every Wednesday night, 9-12, at Monty's Woodland Hills, on Topanga just south of Ventura Blvd. Hosted by Ronnie Gutierrez and Viva Vinson, the house band will do a 45 minute set and then we open it up for people to sit in! Always lots of great talent coming through, music ranges from classic rock to Latin to R&B to Jazz. No cover, bring your instruments!

I'll come dressed in a red drag and sing Red Dress by sugababes in my loud yodeling - trying - to - opera voice for the entire duration of the jam. Maybe I'll also bring some bagpipes and try to learn them for the very first time. Well that would be great, except I dont have any bagpipes :(

We have many of these *jams* throught pdx.  Mostly pentatonic scales up and down, up and down.  Every now and then chromaticism with an occasional detour into the whole tone scale (you know, the black keys).  Don't hear much else, why bother?!OMG I am SO sure!.

I'm sure the black key use was only accidental.

This one time I tried an actual jam, I wondered why anybody does them. They just turn into random noise.

If it's a proper setlist of songs, it can be a lot of fun for the band and the audience.
If it's just "let's riff on a 12-bar blues in G," it's usually painful for anyone not on the stage.

    Hi,

I really wanted to go and do my Vivian Stanshall imitation! Complete with pajamas!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I'm kind of a slow hand when it comes to improvising.  I feel many people try to fill it up with notes, instead of writing an actual tune.  I'm like Salieri:  *too many notes!*
