This is a great song!  Only nit was, while I listened to it I didn't really enjoy having the piano panned  HARD left.  The field on the right was   too empty during most of the song.  I think you could either balance it out somehow or pan the piano more center. This is a non-professional observation so take with a grain of salt.

Joshua, this is a terrific song with a lot of potential.  Your vocals are darned good (love the falsetto), and I like the way you've arranged them.  My main suggestions would be to brighten up the piano sound a tad, but not so much to take away from the bright sounding acoustic guitar.  Also, I would cut back the reverb on the snare, as it tends to mask the drums and distracts a bit.  Overall, the mix sounds warm, but is nearing the point of muddiness.  A small cut in the 200 to 300 hz range might help with this.  Bottom line:  I'm glad you're back with us because I've always enjoyed your tunes.

All the best,
Lynn

Sounds like the basis for a good song, it does sound a little muddy in places and possible a little to much bleed on the snare or as noted to much reverb, will keep the fury ears on the outlook for the remix.

I always love some good piano

the backing vocals are nice

the change at 2:00 is cool

this whole piece is almost like a wall of sound productionIf I were the producer
I would say shorten it by 1:30, and turn up the main vocal.

This is a good song, much talent there.

Is this all you? or do you have a band?

A nice song. Performance sounds good... Can't add to the comments already made here and I'd be out of my depth anyway with this genre.

Joshua,

Good song and vocal performance.  The backing track is a little murky/muddy but some of the tips above should clear it up.   Really nice track.

Re: Juice 2017/03/29 23:16:12 (permalink)
eph221 you know, I think you're right about that. The piano is pretty far left. I wrote, recorded and mixed this song two years ago and never shared it. I think I could go back with some good ideas and try to clean it up.

lynn - do you think it's good enough to just try to do that in a mastering phase or do you think that it's bad enough where I should go back and clean the individual channels up? I also appreciate being around you and this community. I had a bad go with life and it turned me off to doing anything with music for the last two years. Hopefully I can be more consistent. I just love it here. Thank you kindly for your words.

wookiee I agree with the mud on the snare. Unfortunately it might have been the mic picking it up...I'll have to go back and see if I can get some of the articulation out of it.

Jesse Screed - Thank you Jesse, all me. What do you mean by 'wall of production'?

synkrotron -what's your genre of choice? Thanks for listening

markno999 - thanks! I'll try to clean it up and see what happens.

Joshua, I never let EQ decisions go to the mastering stage if I can help it.  I start mastering from the beginning and make all my EQ choices in the mixing stage.  If you have the original tracks, start there.  If not, then do while mastering.  Keep up the good work.

All the best,
Lynn

A really nice song and you have a great voice.
I really like the production and arrangement but the mix could use some work which I am sure you will fix. Maybe finish the song at 3.30 ish or fade the ending.
Good stuff.

Markus & Daryl, thank you. I think I might do a screen cast of what I'm working with and post that. That might be a fun endeavor. I know that two years ago when I produced this I had a tendancy to live and die by plugin's and now I tend to take a more natural approach to my music. I've seen a tremendous difference just by following a couple of rules when it comes to volume and spacing specifically. Thank you again!

synkrotron -what's your genre of choice? Thanks for listening

Hi Joshua,

At the moment I am listening to a lot of strange ambient and avant-garde stuff, mainly because that is the only type of music I can create myself.

When I am not listening to that then I'll be headbanging to bands like Slipknot, Meshuggah, Mastadon, to name a few, or Porcupine Tree, OSI, Amplifier if I don't fancy headbanging haha!

When I was in my late teens ~ early twenties I was big into Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Yes, Black Sabbath and what have you.

So, when I say "out of my depth with this genre," I mean more from a tracking and mix point of view. About ten years ago now I had a go at recording a young local band of lads at my home studio, and that was a blast, and taught me a bit, but I've not done that in a while now and therefore don't feel qualified to comment on "traditional" stuff, other than whether I like it or not.

cheers

Excellent song, very contemporary sounding. Listening through headphones it starts to get quite squashed and pumping in the choruses, maybe back off the compression/limiting there.

Mix/arrangement nits aside, and mostly covered above, I thought the song itself was really strong.    With some tweaks and clean-up I think it could be radio-ready.

I Like this! While I can't reply on the mix too much. I wanted to ask you if you were the person that posted a song called "Straw Man" a few years ago? I really like that song and would like to hear it again if so.
Sorry to change the subject, but I wanted to ask.
