Sundog Song Studio 3 coming soon..

he last months were quite busy here.. I decided to work on the next big update of my electronic songwriting solution Sundog Song Studio :)
With Sundog it is possible to develop new chord progressions, melodies, basslines, and arpeggios within minutes. Sundog connects to any DAW via MIDI (Windows + macOS). More info here: http://feelyoursound.com/sundog/

I am excited to show you some of the new features before the official release (which will be in the middle of April).
Sundog 3 is going to be a free upgrade for all users :)

Here are some of the changes and new features:
  • New name: Sundog Scale Studio will be called Sundog Song Studio from now on.
  • Own pattern search page: Search through the included patterns with the Pattern Finder. Numerous search options available.
  • New pattern structure: Sundog ships with over 200 patterns now, organized in subfolders.
  • Advanced pattern option: Randomize velocity to make natural instruments sound more.. ummm.. natural.
  • Advanced pattern option: Turn on multi-pattern mode to switch between different melodic rhythms during playback.
  • GM compatible preview synth with 128 instruments included.
  • More changes will be announced soon!

I made a short video (7 minutes) for you which shows the new multi-pattern concept + velocity randomization in action (you can also catch a glimpse of the new Pattern Finder):

Thanks Larry,

I'm a Cthulu fan and this looks like another useful songwriting aid in the same ilk. I will give the demo a go pending the v3 update.

New info

Find your best patterns quickly

Hey everybody,

as promised, I want to reveal some other features that will be new in Sundog 3.0 (coming next week!):
  • Instrument menu with special pattern actions: "Reverse pattern", "Remove stop symbols from pattern", "Reset volumes in pattern", "Stretch pattern to double length".
  • Higher resolution for chord progressions: Deactivate "Settings -> Chords View: Show reduced (quarter notes) timeline when possible" if you want to work with sixteenth notes in your chord progressions.
  • Chords View: Better display of chord inversions.
  • Chords View: No message box after successful MIDI export anymore.
  • Start dialog with quickstart help. I am updating the online helper pages at the moment to cover more Sundog settings and features in detail (focus on video content).
And here is a fresh new video which covers the Pattern Finder. Search and skip through your melodic rhythms easily  :)

Hey everybody,

just a few quick notes before the weekend:

It looks like Sundog 3 will be released next Thursday (2017/04/13)  :)

As I said before, Sundog 3 will be a free update.
The old (Sundog 2) price is 44 EUR / $49. Sundog 3 will cost 49 EUR / $55.
However, within the first release week you can get Sundog 3 for the old price.

You can find Sundog here:
http://feelyoursound.com/sundog/

And here are some other new features that will be available in Sundog 3.0:
  • Automatic chord progression optimizations ("Chords" menu): "Minimize finger movement", "Minimize bass note movement", "Minimize highest note movement".
  • Advanced pattern settings: Keep overlapping notes pressed when chords change.
I also made a video about the automatic chord progression optimizations:

Looking forward to the next week :). Have a nice weekend!

Cheers,
Hauke

Re: Sundog Song Studio 3 coming soon.. 2017/04/07 18:18:16 (permalink)
I have been playing around with the Sundog 2 demo for a few days.

The available videos cover the basic use fairly quickly, so it doesn't hurt to read the brief user guide, and just dive in.

It is a standalone app that can send 15 instrument channels to your DAW via a virtual MIDI cable, or play the Windows GM sounds, so it is multi-timbral, but without a tracksheet or trackview to see the big picture.

It offers some unique features for working with scales (300) and chords.  The central view is a modified PRV (Piano Roll View) that shows only the notes in the chords or scale used by a part.  So you can paint in any pattern of notes and they will stay in key.  Cool!

You have full control over channel, instrument, velocity, key, scale, chords, tempo, length of part (up to 16 bars), and you can chain multiple parts together.  No way to import MIDI, but it supports drag and drop to your DAW (works with Sonar), or MIDI file export.

In a nutshell:

> First, you choose a scale and a base note. Now all notes that are played will match the scale.

> Second, you select some chords. Sundog offers a wide selection of useful chords per scale. You can listen to them by clicking on buttons.

> Third, you trigger playback patterns by dragging your mouse or entering notes with your keyboard.

> Now all output notes can either get mapped to the currently active chord notes or to the scale notes

There are still a few things that I'd like to see improved, so I will definitely be checking out V3.

I like the features offered, but the main issue for me is the UI.  The workflow is just awkward for me.  Setting up chord progressions could be easier.

Only seeing one track at a time seems unnatural to me.  I like to see the relationship of all tracks on a timeline.  There is a reason most DAWs use that metaphor.  Except that I don't want this to become yet another DAW, but a project view would be helpful.

DAWs are now a dime a dozen, but there is a true lack of MIDI only song composition assistance tools.  So I think this has a lot of potential.

I tried the demo last night... played with it for about an hour.  I have to agree with abacab... it's got a very awkward workflow.  I can't really see anything useful in it.
I guess this program is oriented to folks who know nothing about music theory but I would think someone would be better off learning some theory rather than learning to use a clumsy program like this.
I uninstalled it and will now unsubscribe from their mailing list.
Maybe I will give Tracktion a try this weekend.

My earlier comments were based on the version 2 demo.  So now that I have tried the version 3 demo hoping for some workflow improvements, I have to say nothing has really changed in that regard other than that a few new features have been added.  So more like a 2.5 than a full point upgrade.

Same interface.  Maybe it's me, but I cannot see or visualize what is going on when a pattern plays, using the Pattern  Trigger and the Patterns.  To have to compute what the numerical values in the pattern are doing to "see" the pattern makes it difficult for me to work with.

It would be easier to follow along if this tool employed a standard piano roll, or step sequencer, instead of re-inventing the wheel with a new language.

Otherwise, it could be a great creative assistant as far as chords and scales.

Bottom line is that I just bought Tracktion Waveform.  The new MIDI tools in that are exactly what I was looking for.  Highly recommend trying the demo, and especially watching the tutorial video on using the Pattern Generator.  The more I work with it, the more I like this part of it.  Puts a whole new spin on using a piano roll editor!
