For the future, you should strongly consider having backup images.  If you do a backup image after a working session, say, once a month, it virtually guarantees you have a reliable system-state you can restore from.

I'm a casual home user, and by following this method, I'm never more than a 15 min restore away from a working system. Needless to say, I can't imagine anything less in a commercial situation.

Of course, the backups won't help you with a hardware breakdown, but 99% of the time the problem is software-related.  The $40 expense for backup imaging software is a pittance to pay for that peace of mind.

I'm not trying to kick you when you're down -- just pointing out that (with any type of software glitch) major downtime is completely avoidable.

Good luck, John.

I don't want it to happen again, but I don't know how it happened and can't take any action to prevent it. If you read the thread you will see that I do have a backup system including saving after every take, daily backup and off-site storage of another copy of everything.

I don't use auto save but I do use versioning and keep 10 versions to fall back on. I use the save as option every time I start to edit raw tracks. That way if I get a crash during the edit process I have the untouched original tracks saved.
I hope for the best and plan for the worst. At some point I have to rationalize how many versions of a project to keep around. There's really no way of knowing how the system may fail, so I save after every take using 10 rolling versions, make a daily on site backup and keep an off site backup.

Thanks for sharing your insight on keeping the flow going.

Re: Biggest Sonar problem I've ever had 2017/04/08 23:57:30 (permalink)
looks like take lane view ,. while in take lane view the clips wont appear under the track they appear under take lanes,.
i have had individual track actu p from time to time,. where there is nothing i can do for them move the daa to another track , rite clic,. insert new track then move the picture data to the new track,.
in your case it can be accessed from either your wave directory using windows or thru the browser view by hitting 'B'
thats the only thing i can think of rite now,
oh yes,
the file track maybe are showing way far off screen,.
relax,. would you,.
sonar is logical, it is allways something that is easy to fix,.
import at midi time or something could be something like that,. i dont recall now,.
1st
set the cursor on the left margin
and then drop the files into the track view from windows,
sonar will write the track name using the name from the wave file
when ever the files do not appear (usually)they are off screen,.
if your like me your gonna feel like a dummy when you see what it is,
thats the way i allwasy feel,.
theyre are only like about a million things that can go wrong
so take your time and dont get worried ,. sonar works good ,.
as i said, every now and then, a audio track stops working ,
hardly ever ,. if it does happen veryseldom,.
much easier and faster to insert a new track
(rather tnen try and figure out whats wrong and how to fix it,)
then move the data to the new track,.
delete the track thats not working, but i dont think thats your trouble rite now,
you may see it during the years ahead,.
i been using sonar for over 10 years now,.
every day,.
SONAR works good, when it doesnt, it is something i have set wrong or need to reboot or,
hardly ever, once or twice in the past 10 years, reinstall using the install file patch panic button fixes whats wrong, thats very rare,
i have had thousands of tracks in a project,.
never have seen them disappear.
have you tried looking under track manager?, hit 'H'

oh , yes the options for copy,. and drag copy
the new version uses something i did not expect that messed me up too,
rather then blend old with new,. it was saying move over to make room
there are 3 choices and once one of them is made , it stays there until you change it.
itll stay like that for months or years if you dont change it,.
but the new versions installer change it to slide over to make room' or
'align to measures' or something,.
really blew my mind when i saw it do that,.
i advise you not to cancel work ,
go check it out again and dont give up until you find it
your using the rite resource now, these forums are good and helpful,.
i recently added a new cellular phone,. i too have no internet connect to my machine,. normally,
however, new phone,. you can get them cheap nowadays on special deals,.
new phone has a usb cable port
(my old 5 dollar used phone had that port too,)
that i can plug into my machine and then i have internet,.
they call it 'usb tetheing"
have to pay for something else i dont use (mobille hotspot) to get the service but,.
it isnt unlimited , even tho i have an unlimited plan,
when im hooked up to the internet i have to watch it.,. microsoft' ll use up my whole allotment of bytes for the month doing updates
then the circuit slows WAY down 100 times slower to dial up speed,.
crawling,. 120kilo bits per second which was fast back when we used telex machines,.
and twx teletype machines,. 100 words per minute
that was early mid 1980's,. late70s, and 60's
telex was strong,. nowadays it takes several days 24 hours a day to update anything at that speed,. 300 years to send a full project
with all audio and all,.
workaround,. i can download sonar patchs direct to the phone then move them to the computer and that way i i dont use up any bytes of the phone to computer patch .,
it does work and is cheaper then having a phone and a computer hook up and i m on a low budget, but i am working every day on sonar,.
even tho im not receiving any kind of pay for doing so ,.i have product preped.
thats the main thing
im on fixed income so i have to watch my coins,.
i manage to buy needed upgrades or hardware too if i watch my coins,.
thats another story tho

maybe that'll help you hook up your machine if only temporary,.
your gonna find the trouble tomorrow when you look ,.
good luck,.
.for other help as musicians of all kinds and guitarists, there is afm.com

Re: Biggest Sonar problem I've ever had 2017/04/09 00:31:25 (permalink)
Hi man
If you saved your project after every record,
Then you shud be able to open the version with the closest time after the lost track
I advise using auto save,.
Having hot head customer, that why auto save is in be yet.
I have version set to something like 2048 or so and save as often.
Don't worry about disk space nowadays.
Any modern machine can handle 1924. Ersions no trouble.
Plus
Ioli has a program to search the disk.
You may find the file there,
If
If it was ever saved.
SONAR NEVER EVER deletes files
Sonar only deletes pictures of files in the track view.
It is not possible to delete Saved
Audio.
Only Windows can delete data from audio folder.
With a customer, not advisabke, were here to record, not delete.
If the project was not saved,.
And
Say a cimputer or program crash occurs
A fact of life.
If the project was not saved after the record and you exit.
The data deletes because it had never been written to disk.
If you saved it the it shud be there.
Unless you inadvettantl hit delete from Windows explorer.
Having full picture cache won't cause this
I all ways set pic cache to 2000 any way
When full pictures have to be redrawn on opening a project.

So many times,.,.many times.
Most alkways,if I have a trouble.
It is something I haven't set rite.
SONAR is pretty much bullet proof these days.
Up to date Microsoft C++.we do have minor trouble but I've never had ant trouble for which there is no way to work around with SONAR,included with SONAR
I I was unsure,
I can AL WAYS find answers in offline help files,.ALWAYS.
I had no line,. So I remembered a saying I read on the forum when I first started using SONAR.
Rtfm
Read the manual.
It's all in there.
Except the piece above
How if it's not saved,
It'll delete on exit or undo
And then reapply in case of fx.
Try it when the customer ain't looking over your shoulder.

computer crashes are a way of life.
I advise setting minimum processor minimum power up around 96 per cent to minimize crashes
And oo set it in HI performance.
Then minimum 'll b 109 percent.

If you saved the project, the file is on the disk and can be recovered using iolo.
There are other programs too
They give em too you.
But they don't work until you buy a license.
10 years, I never ever saw anything like that.
Only if the lane is muted then it disappears from the track.
I didn't type that above.
I'm typing on a cell phone screen FYI
I'm over
Later friend,
Out

... Sonar will no longer see those files. I can play them in other media players and DAW's, but not Sonar. I created a new project and tried to import the wav files. I can see them, Sonar sees them and says it's importing them, but after the import I'm left with an empty track...

If other DAWs can read the files but Sonar can't, doesn't this suggest that your Sonar, and not the data, has gotten corrupted?  You don't say if the other DAWs can play the files.

That's why I suggested that a system image (with a good snapshot of Sonar) could be restored in short time and the data imported back in.  If that's not correct, then my apologies, I'm not understanding you correctly.

Disk data line and or disk power line.
I've lost power to a drive with SONAR UP.
What happened?
That was a while ago.

Unspecified error dialog
sonar refused to write the data to disk.
I was applying eq I believe.

The data never was saved. Lost 1 note.
No biggee.
I don't remember if tracks disappeared or not
Sas drivez,.
6 drive array lost.
It was a "Y" power converter
Piece of rusty ship 2 new ones
Not yet
I shot it with WD a few times
Then
Finally cut it off there and soldered the power leads rather then use it and keep intermittent failing.
Ok now
The whole drive disappeared
And I couldn't shut down soon enuf.
Another time heat made the sas raid controller fail. A few times.
It has a fan now and is ok.
Sorry for typing errors.
Phone sometimes changes the spelling and I haven't been proof reading
Later friend.

All WAYS importbroadcast waves at their time stamp
Prefer>aiudio data>All projects

Or below on the same tab
Apply smpte offset etc

Or
Just having the cursor too far over.
Why hit a before that.
That's happened to me plenty of times
Where is it.
I had SONAR act up the other day too.
On a copy paste to new track.
Didn't work rite.
Would not place data on a new track
Rather then try to figure out why and how to fix it or prevent recurrance,
I simply exit SINAR,then,reopen,trouble gone.
Just save it then Exit
Reopen and ok now.
Sometimes
Memory can flip.
Is why most glitches happen according to an article I read on error correction memory
ECC memory.
Seriously, several billion.2 bytes in memory there.
And
It low voltage,.
Reminiscent of flakey flashlites.
Low voltage,
Disk drives have cache memory too.
There's only a few million potential troubles
I hope your customer cools off
Computer troubles are not some unheard of thing
And I hope you find it.
You will.no doubt
Trust SONAR .i do,
For the most part.
It's a good program

Could this have anything to do with a full picture cache?

Agree on the picture cache, but that is a hard to run that one to ground (just know about it).

As far as the import with "no file" did you actually find where that file went? Take lane, or broadcast wav would be my first guess (basically out of sight, but "somewhere"). When you say that file is playable by other media players, can you also preview it from SONAR's browser?

Re: Biggest Sonar problem I've ever had 2017/04/11 14:12:08 (permalink)
I seen this on some occasions.
I fiddled with the box of numbers Sonar put in to the top tool bar...I do not know the name of that box.

Seemed to me, that in some cases of unknowns, the box number selected might change randomly, and the track count seeming disappears .

Also long drawing of wav form content was a issues back then.

As I got so boggled by the Odd things occurring, and side windows undocking and disappearing also...
Plus dropped audio devices...and or plagues there in on.

I stopped taking the Platform being used here, as a serious machine for Music, using Said DAW.

Playing with the number box in sonar, started to show me that number 1 in that Box on Sonar top tool bar box thingy, that lets user put different setups of page views into or set as a number in that box to a specific page setup might be behind some of it?....did bring back certain lost setup pages back to view though, and tracks that disappeared, returned when playing with that box and the numbers.

Not sure why it decided to just randomly switch things up for me...not even touching a mouse , keyboard or other...as not much else is being used here.

So, in forms here, some have claimed ODD behavior or random and or buggy unreproducible actions have occurred.

That said...

Not sure if it helps...but, it sure is a "kisser" when things that should be set and soundly locked, are not, and that which should not be occurring, Is...Change the K to a P...

As most of my PC builds are now retired to just plain internet suffering now...I trust not the machines with OS MS.

I seemingly have issues with streaming youtube  at high very speed, and sound being of jitter and or not smooth, or cut off of any sound, depending on content being viewed, and always sounding being interrupted.....I must confess, I feel, and have felt your pains trying to learn why it is as it is for some, and yet not all?.

Eh?...is it a selectively smart bug put to cause frustration?
And as so being done to some, does it not carry over into Life, as a vexation of mind?
And if so maddened by such things....how does it effect your Living state?

Just little things...so employed or put to the test....How does this effect Life?.

Mind control?....I believe we can break it down to Something wanting some to become Frustrated.

That is all I know at this time.

Why might not be the proper things sought...."What", might be behind it, is more prudent to seek reason.

And the Son said, You can move the mountain when ready!.

Cheers!
