Superman Curl (ver. 2.0)
I posted this song about two years ago. People liked it but it never sat well with me. I went in and added a new guitar part, subbed out instruments, as well as a new mix. I just uploaded it to SoundCloud so before I start fooling with tweaks I figure I go right to the source of the experts. Thank you for listening and helping. You don't know... https://soundcloud.com/jmasno5/superman-curl

Apparently Ron from HotLixx liked it a couple of years ago! :) I think I gave this a spin, and I dunno what I said then, but now I like it! It's hi-energy and I bet I compared it to REM. I'd vote for vocal volume up a tad. If you go to somewhere like 1:50, I think the snare is just about as loud as the vocals, and they occupy a similar part of the spectrum. I liked very much when you took it down to nothing, and then built it back up. Catchy. good luck with it! in twenty years you can re-write it, how she's in love with your combover. :) -Tom

Tom and John, Thanks for the input. I boosted the vocal bus 1db but matched that with a cut in the main guitar part around 1K where there was a little conflict. I tried to side-chain the lead vocal with the main grt part but Platinum crashed. I think since the original project was on X3 and now working on it in Platinum some wires are now crossed.

Great stuff John. I do remember it which has to be a good thing right? Hooky, well recorded and performed. Guitars are excellent.

I remember this from when you posted it before. I liked it then and I like it now. Whatever you did to it made it much more greater. Very catchy tune. John B.

Daryl and John, Thank you for listening. I'm glad you remembered it from the last time too. I feel much better about the sound of it and arrangement of instruments. Aside from the new main guitar part, I added sustaining guitar power chords. It really helped lift the choruses.

I remember listening to this the first time around too... I don't recall what I might have commented on before, but like others I liked it this time around! Very catchy, with a good pop-rock mix. I really liked that chord transition from verse to chorus. And the vocals sound great as usual... though maybe just a bit low in a few spots.

Hiya John I can't remember what I listened to two weeks ago, so going back two years is going to be an impossible task, even for something as well done as Superman Curl. I'm going to do the usual and compare it to something I am familiar with, and that something is Foo Fighters. I could certainly see that particular band performing this song. Not going to comment on mix and what have you cos I ain't qualified to do so. But this is a good solid song, in my opinion and definitely sits in the Alt Rock genre you have tagged it as. cheers andy

Steve, Thank you. This new mix has power chords and a melodic main guitar. I tightened up the vocals too. I feel there are parts where the vocal could be a little louder but then I was thinking in those parts that I really like the guitars and the listener must know what the words are by now. LOL.

Andy, Thank you so much. Yes, I hear Foo Fighters too. In fact, I used a Foo Fighters tune as a reference track to check the guitars and bass loudness.

Nice track John! The references to Foo Fitghter and R.E.M. are pretty accurate. I think this mix sounds pretty fine overall, especially considering all of the energy in the song. It comes through well in the mix. I don't think I would change a thing. Regards, Dan

Thanks Dan. I'm really happy with it. I think I'm more detail oriented now. I know this forum helped me with that. I learned a lot in two years. Aside from mixing, I think songs sound more interesting if there is a hooky subplot to the arrangement. That's what I think the new guitar part does for this song. Before it was just loud, straight ahead guitars.
