No Self Control (Country Version) Feat. String Jammer, Danny Danzi, Bapu & Some New Guys

First off, I'd like to thank The Beagle (Reece Bain) whose idea it was to do a country version of this tune.  So, I replaced the synths with a banjo and pedal steel, and the electric guitars with acoustics... other than Danny's part which supplies the drive... came up with a new drum track and remixed a bunch of times.  This is what we came up with:
 https://soundcloud.com/phil-doyle-292979186/no-self-control-country-version
The players (other than myself) are:
Gregg Bolger- Vocals
Ed (Bapu) Kocol)- Bass
Danny Danzi- Rhythm Guitar
Scott (String Jammer) Campbell- Fiddle
Johnny Butten- Banjo
Bruce Hoffman- Pedal Steel

All comments welcome naturally, though favorable ones should come to me and unfavorable one should go to The Beagle

    Ha! That was awesome

Can't remember the last time I listened to a Country & Western song but I'm glad I listened to this. It works really well.

No nits or crits from me. Perfect in every way

Phil and friends, this is an EXCELLENT version!  love it!  I'm not a big country fan myself, but when I heard this song I thought a country version would be perfect for it!

It does very much suit the Country treatment.
My only nit (and it did annoy me) is the drums sound very robotic and drum machine-like. With all the real musicianship going on, it really jumps out to me.

I went to your Soundcloud page. Was there a song there?    :)

I though the intro violin snippit could be louder. The song makes country just fine. Nice to write something that translates to another genre!

So you have "country" as a target, and this song hits the bullseye - at perhaps the cost of uniqueness. This sounds like a mainstream hit, which is waaaay cool, but another take might be a little more sloppy/roadhouse/Black Crowes southern rocky type feel. Perhaps that would be genre #3!!!  As an experiment, you might mute the banjo. Does that bring it a little farther south than Nashville?

That said, I'm more of a Dale Watson country aficionado, and I have never written a good country anything, so what the hell do I know?

cheers Phil, a very solid effort indeed. Radio-ready, as they say!

Country yes! But I hear just a tad of good ol rock when that rhythm guitar gets edgy. That's a good thing on my end. Nice picking on that banjo too. Vocals and harmonies are a perfect fit. Like the whole concept and arrangement. Great job!

I found it a little too archetypal. Nevertheless, its first rate production-wise

philz, that is a fun piece.   I liked the original too, but it is neat to hear how you slid to the right and turned this country.

I really like the violin part, did you play that?

Of course your ensemble is legendary round these here parts, so I expect a top notch piece, and you deliver.

I think I said the first version sounded very cali, now I can say this one sounds nashville.  keep them coming my bother.

Who are the girls in the picture?  They were very distracting holding those guns and all.

Great version, Phil! Where did you find these banjo and pedal steel guys? The arrangement sounds really good. Great fiddle fills as usual from Scott, its mandatory for a nice country song as this. Didn't hear the first version but this sounds very right!

The genre-switch works very well. Along with the instrument changes, I suppose you'd have to get into a CW mind set as well, which could be a lot of fun. I enjoyed listening to this version. I also kind of liked the photo on your Soundcloud page.

Hi Phil, this is awesome! Not sure what I was expecting but this is pretty much perfect. Even the lyrics seem to be suited to this style. Great playing and singing from everyone involved.

Well, I am sending this to you because I have no complaints.  This is a great community effort by a bunch of great musicians.  Timing is perfect and I was impressed by the way the vocals really fell in perfectly with the rhythm of this song.  It made me want to get up and two-step and I don't know how to do that (or dance for that matter).

    Great work y'all!!

I enjoyed listening to this one transformed into a tantalizing toe-tapper very much. I'm a fan of good country and the bunch of you definitely play some good country. I'd love to hear more; I think a live set recorded in some seedy bar with good acoustics might be just the thing! :)

Scotty- Thanks for your work on the tune.
    Steve- Thank you.
Lasse- Thanks, glad you liked it.  Johnny (banjo) and Bruce (pedal steel) can be found on airgigs.com
Bjorn- Thanks- It was a lot of fun switching genres and changing out instruments.  Danny's rhythm track and Ed's bass track were the only holdovers from the original.
Freddy- Thanks for the kind words.
Laura- Thank you, there's more good country where that came from... just haven't posted them yet.
