Can I change track colurs and make them "stick"?

Having got into a protracted argy-bargy with support, I still cannot work out how to set track colours, such as Audio tracks are red, MIDI tracks are....blue etc, every time I open or start a project.

Is there a way? I swear I used to use Preferences, Customise, Colours. Is it different now?

Thanks for any help.

Set your tracks up the way you want them. Then save as track or project template.
Start new project and load your saved template.

OK and thanks. But that does not allow me to set up that _all_ projects, new or existing, will have Audio tracks red, MIDI tracks blue etc...... AFAICS......

This really did not matter to me until the new PRV. I use MIDI a lot (nearly all) but anyway, Audio and Synth tracks seem pointless in a PRV.

If you have an existing project, then any colors were already assigned (or not) so you have to re-assign new colors.

But I thought with Customize Colors I could set up a set of colors for stuff for any projects...audio this,,,MIDI that,,. Am I just dreaming?

BTW ...What does a track's foreground color actually mean? Please show me a Red FG vs a Yellow BG  means.

Thanks.

You can set up color preferences for global colors (Pool lines, clip pan envelopes, etc.), but track coloring is done on a project basis (at least at the moment).

hmmm...maybe I was gulled and disillusioned.....I begin to womder that Track Colour means something other than what I think. I thought I had set that globally before. But maybe not.

Thank you.

So what exactly is
When a track color is set to Default, the track strip will not be tinted, and clips will revert to using the track colors that are specified in the Preferences dialog box (Edit > Preferences > Customization - Colors).
Figure 61. Default track colors are defined in the Preferences dialog box.

"foreground" colors relate to the waveform in a clip.

problem with this is you can't use black as your waveform (without hoop jumping) because they took away the "background" colors option within the menu you are showing. Now, since the default 'background' colors are blackish, not too much contrast.

Some of the preferences are no longer exposed but still exist. The easiest way to modify them is via "Import/Export Colors..." shown above and modify the color set in an earlier SONAR X version. The background colors would need to be set this way.

I tried this using 8.53 export colors. It didn't work in Splat.
I don't think I want to install X2 just to see if it works. Which would of course require uninstalling Splat first and re-installing after X2 install.

How did Cakewalk market this new "feature"?
"Buy Sonar Platinum Today. It's great. Just make sure Sonar X3 is installed so that Platinum will work."

Is it the case now that one can pick colors for a track and when recording new clips, those colors will apply?  If so, that is a new feature in Platinum (though it was in 8.5.3.).  Please advise.

Either way, I am loyal to Sonar.  It is just the way I am!

OK. Thank you for all the replies. I did not get what I wanted to hear, but now understand what I can't have.

The color templates from X1-X3 are linked in this post (no need to install X1 or X2). As stated above, the background colors have not been directly editable in X3/Platinum (so you would need X1 or X2 installed to edit the clr file(s)).

Quick edit: X3 does not allow editting either

Hey, thanks for that mettelus.

A little confused by the instructions though as it downloads as a clr file but you say save as text and then re-save as clr again. Plus, it is all the color templates in one file? So, I copy out each into a separate txt and then clr?
Thanks

They are all in the same file. I should have edited that post long ago simply to "right click and save as"

Once you download it, you can move it to your default location in prefs and load it. All variations are in that one clr file.

 thanks mettelus.
I tried your X2 custom. Much better.
I'll have to fish around in your file to see what you did. And, refer to your other instructions.
great stuff. Thanks

Like was said, you can change the colors and set up a template. If you save it over the default Basic.cwt template, it will automatically open at startup or whenever you start a new default project. This way there is no need to close down the current default and re-open your template every time.

I would suggest renaming the Basic.cwt so you have it if you ever want to return to the default.

It is not retroactive though. It will not change all your previous projects to your template.

yea. that's the problem I'm having (retroactive).

so, I've always used normal.cwt. Should I be using basic.cwt.?

I guess it is a personal preference and system settings. Whenever I opened Sonar it would open the basic.cwt template so I just overwrote it. Now whenever I open Sonar it opens my "default" template.

Prior to the July 2015 release, the default project template was hard-coded to normal.cwt. This is no longer the case. The default may be set to any project template in the New Project dialog and the Start Screen.
