It's unfortunate that Cakewalk's development model makes it impossible for third parties to create video's and users guides. By the time anyone creates something, it's outdated. Even Cakewalk doesn't create videos anymore.

Yes it is not a good thing that CW has so few third party video tutorials. We are left to make it on our own. Our best instructor is Craig. That dude keeps coming up with stuff that's outta the box!!

I think since Sonar went to monthly updates, this is a little hard to keep up to date with a book. I maybe wrong. Just speculating here.

Maybe Scott Garrigus could start a subscription model? You know, publish a baseline Platinum book that covers all the new goodies added since X3. Then he could publish periodic updates, like appendixes, for all of the new features in each month's Sonar update... I have the Sonar X3 Power book and I still refer to it. But without Craig's big book of tips, the Cakewalk blog and update articles, and this forum. I would be lost! I did see another thread around here somewhere, where it was stated that some additional education efforts are under way with the Bakers, as well as a new, improved eZine!!!

It's even worse on us who are just starting about learning about home based recording. As a beginner, learning Sonar is far worse when everything changes monthly.

So have you watched these videos yet? Great place to get started! These are free now, based on Sonar X2. The core Sonar features still apply to the basics of recording and editing. Some menus have moved and a few UI elements and menus have been upgraded, but the concepts of using Sonar are still true. Don't worry about all the new bells and whistles yet. You'll know when you need them when you run out of tools! He could just do an annual update, ie. SONAR 2017.

I don't know..... The record arm button seems to be the same from release to release so it could be said that not everything changes monthly.

Hey husker... if they went back to a yearly or 6 month update cycle would be the guy who would claim that it takes too long to get fixes and improvements? That's kind of the way it was in the X3 and before days.

Don't get my wrong - I believe the monthly update cycle is a good thing - it helps the majority of the users. People will complain about any decision that is made. I wasn't complaining - I was merely making a point that it is challenging to learn software when things change on such a rapid pace. As an extreme newbie, I am an outlier here, I understand that. I would argue about the Record Arm button, but I don't really know what that is. :)

Not yet, I am still working on hardware and learning about routing. I did buy the Groove 3 Sonar set, hopefully I can get to that in the next month or so.

No time to watch videos? You know, it's old school, but reading the manual never hurt. There's even a few tutorials in there. Sometimes I prefer a book to a video, because I can turn pages fast to get what I want to know. Compared to a video that is committed to a block of time determined by a producer, reading is sometimes a more efficient way to learn. I think the true value of videos is to demonstrate an unfamiliar technique with a step by step visual guide. But for just learning the terminology and how something works, I'd rather read about it. And play around with it. Just my two cents!

You've been a great help to me, so your two cents is worth far more to me! I've just really been "sidetracked." I'm a synth nut, and I have acquired Moog and Nord rack units in the past few months, which led to a new audio interface and a midi interface. I'm in the process of learning those, and reading a book about subtractive synthesis. One of these days, I'll actually get around to Sonar!
