Orbus

Orbus is a song about orphans and is dedicated in memory of Sacred Heart Home. Original release date was April 4 2016 and has since been fitted with a new drum track and other modifications. Have a listen and feel free to comment.

Excellent stuff this, you really play with feeling! Love the effects on the vocals. And ordinarily I'd suggest bringing that bass down a tad, but since it's such a sparing bass part you get away with it and it really adds weight to the track and drives it along.

    Excellent stuff...

Thanks a bunch James. I'm still working this one out and not totally happy with the drums. I get a little closer each time I go at it. I think I have to bring the kick up a bit more on these mixes of mine. I'm a little shy on the bottom end with the drum kick and my ear is trying to make up for it with the bass.

Lots of good work here....would like to hear the vox a bit more separated as they seems to compete for the same space at times....also I would like to hear the lead in the into come up a bit.

    Nice emotional ride!

Thanks thepogue. Which version, 1 or 2?  Really just working on getting the drum track established. The first attempt was a bit quirky. I think this one hits everything much better.  Nevertheless, I'll remember your suggestions when I get this drum work all squared away.

    Hiya Dean,

I like both versions, of course, but the second mix pulls out in front, just a tad

    cheers

Both mixes work I think it depends on what you want to be the most forward, thanks for sharing.

Andy and Wookie, thanks for the input. The thing that is irritating me the most at this moment is the drum track. I don't think I'm catching the feel of this entirely. Also, the bass is perhaps a bit sparse. Still experimenting with it. Thanks for the review!

Wow!  I'd take you back in a heartbeat.  This is one of the reasons I come to this site, songs like this.  I love your voice and guitar sound so much that it doesn't matter which version you use.  The drums and bass are just right for this, imo.  There's a lot to be said for sparseness, or less is more.  It serves to highlight your voice and guitar playing, which to me are the stars in this tender ballad.  More, please.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Ha! Lynn, your comment put a smile on my face. You are very kind soul and I appreciate all of your complements. I agree, there is a certain and genuine elegance that comes with simplicity.

Thank you Lynn for the very nice review and making me laugh with your kind offer.

This is nice...  it has an appropriately melancholy feel to it.   When the vocals kick in it seems to get a Floyd-ish vibe.   FWIW, I like the second version better.   The snare drum in particular doesn't seem quite as up-front and dry, and just blends better IMO.

Thanks Steve for the nice review. The snare was a struggle in this one, and I too think the second one sits better than the first.
