IDEA: MIDI CC LABELING/NAMING
if you like this idea, please vote here: https://bakery.cakewalk.com/Idea/15431/Labeling-CC-Controls Seems like there is some extra space, could be useful to have an option (kind of like drum map names), but for CC labeling. Sometimes I have 4 or 5 of these and I have to write down on a piece of paper: CC 56: Filter Cutoff CC 57: Filter Resonance etc... How about a naming system that would show up here in the PRV?

Good idea (voted it up), although it'd probably entail a more significant change to the project file format than one might think. Certainly not beyond the abilities of the CW crew, but I wouldn't expect it to be implemented immediately.

I would think it would just be an additional field when first choosing the parameter... in the dialog window that comes up and asks what you want to control.

I might be wrong , but I think this is already possible.
Go to Preferences (p)
Goto MIDI | Instruments and click "define" On the right hand pane, under "Controllers", there should be an entry called "Standard". If there is not one there, create it. If there is one there, click on the plus to see the names.
If entry called "Standard" was there, you can edit the names directly and the changes should reflect in Sonar without having to restart Sonar.
If you had to create the "Standard" entry, you can add the controller names there. Don't forget to add the controller number when adding a name - this makes it easier to know which controller number is there. you might have to restart Sonar so that it can reread the entries.
This is what I have done and which I add controller information in the event list or PRV, the names actually list rather than just numbers
Now, make a backup of your Master.ins file located here (in case you bugger this up and need to revert):
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum
Note: if you have a hardware synth attached to a MIDI port, then the (properly configured) instrument definition file for that synth will override the above information.

this also seems like you have to use the same controller numbers everywhere. doesnt seem fluid enough. What if CC 57 is a filter cutoff for one synth but a filter resonance on another?

What happens if you enable at least one MIDI out port in MIDI settings?

it becomes enabled, but the problem here is that this seems to be global for any track. I want to set a CC on the fly. And what if CC 57 is a filter cutoff for one synth but a filter resonance on another?

You're right about that. It would be good if we could define controller names for each softsynth. Hardware synths have their own instrument definition tables. Softsyths should have them too. I notice that for Rapture Pro there are definitions for the NRPN names, but those must be programmed i the VST itself somehow.... I think the whole "instrument definition" thing in Sonar needs a major overhaul
