MIDI Controller Knobs Only Controlling Sonar But Not VSTs

Hello,
 
I have a Novation ZeRO SLMKII controller which I am using in advanced mode mapping knobs to MIDI CC #s.
 
I know I have it hooked up correctly because I am able to use Remote Control Learn on any SONAR related parameter such as:  Track Vol, Track Pan, etc...   
 
BUT - I cannot get the knobs to control any softsynth parameters.  (I made sure I had proper CC mappings in the VST of course).
 
Any help is much appreciated!

    i should add, that if I use the synth rack to map a parameter to the assignable controls, I then can use Remote Control to adjust the parameter, but I rather record as MIDI CC - not automation.

    I record MIDI CC just fine with my MPK225 controller, not sure why this should be any different.

    just bumping this.  not sure why i can get CC to control stuff in Sonar but not my VSTs.  is it a simple thing I am missing?
