SONAR 8.5.2 with Presonus AudioBox 44VSL: can't hear playback

Sonar 8.5 was working ok with the AudioBox44VSL, but "disconnected" frequently.  After several driver updates from AudioBox, and each seeming to fix the problem for awhile (until it came back), my latest AudioBox update, called "Universal Control", now doesn't work with Sonar 8.5, even after upgrading to 8.5.2.  I can hear playback under SONAR X3 (x64) but not SONAR 8.5.2 (x32) connected to an AudioBox44VSL.  does anybody know how to work through such a (common) issue?  thanks in advance -- Jim Alexander

Your disconnect issue is likely caused by a default setting in Windows.

If you go into Control Panel, and get into the Power Management Advanced options, there is a setting for USB devices (sorry cannot recall exact parameter name), but it is something like USB Selective Suspend - anyways, turn that OFF, and save your power plan changes (I also run on max performance and never let the computer hibernate), that USB settings change will tell Windows NOT to disconnect USB devices.  (The default allowed Windows to disconnect USB devices to save power).

I also would advise you to update 8.5.2 Sonar to 8.5.3, which was the last available update to that release.

As far as your audio playback issues - make sure that Sonar is using an ASIO Driver Mode, and that it is using the ASIO drivers from your interface.  Also, make sure NOTHING other than Sonar is set to use the ASIO drivers, or Sonar will not get access to the interface.  (so do NOT let Windows use the ASIO drivers of the interface for its Windows Default Audio Device).

(Only 1 application can access  the ASIO drivers at a time, so just have SONAR pointing to them).

Try the above and please then post back with the results.

Hi Bob:
problem solved.  The "Master" (that red bus at the bottom of the track list) output was assigned to "none".  As soon as I assigned it to "Line Out 1/2" (which is the same set of channels that the Options->Audio->General->(Playback Timing Master, Record Timing Master) are assigned to) then everything worked fine.  (all of the track's outputs were assigned to "Master").  (Line Out 1/2 is assigned to my AudioBox44VSL channels 1 and 2).  Thanks for the tip on the USB power-saving mode issue in Windows 10.  I'll make sure and turn that off.

is there any way to repay you?  you threw me a rope while I was drowning and dead-in-the-water.  thanks so very much! -- Jim Alexander

PFFFT - I would have to start putting forum folks in my WILL to repay them for the countless things I have learned (been rescued) from the folks here.  :)

What would be best would be for you to take some time on a recurring basis to cruise through threads in the different forums, and when you see one where you have some idea of how to help that person - jump in and do so.

It's that whole paying it forward concept.  That's what so many of the folks in the Cakewalk community do so well - and it is a HUGE asset, where pretty much as long as folks are willing to engage in the problem analysis/resolution process, and try to do their homework too - the folks here often bend over backwards to help others.  We are all trying to learn and do the same kinds of things, and working on it all with a spirit of cooperative partnership is incredibly helpful.

As you encounter new things in Sonar that you are trying to figure out, or have new issues pop up along the way - you can fairly often find that others have experienced similar situations, or have posted about a given subject, here in these forums, so learning how to search the forums will GREATLY assist you with both resolving issues and with just learning how to do things in Sonar.

Please note that the forum's software search pretty much blows chunk, but Google searches with some added filters work VERY well at returning concise search results.

So, if looking for info on an issue with the Now Marker scrolling very oddly or not at all, just searching Google for:

Sonar Platinum Now Marker Scrolling

Returns about 1.5 MILLION results.  Not so good.

Adding the following filter to the Google search (site:forum.cakewalk.com):

site:forums.cakewalk.com Sonar Platinum Now Marker scrolling

Returns around 400 results - as it tells Google to only search the Cakewalk forums for the search terms Sonar Platinum Now Marker scrolling

There are also zillions of YouTube videos on just about anything you wanted to do in Sonar, as well as the Sonar tutorials, the Sonar documentation, commercial books and videos.

So, hopefully, some of the above will further assist you in learning about using Sonar to create/produce music, and if you too can help others out with their issues, like the others in these forums, then you too will help strengthen the community, completing the Circle of Fifths/Life.
