Been doing that using both an Axe-FX and a Helix.
IMO, It's particularly cool when you create your own Cab IRs.
Cabs you like... mic'd the way you like

celestion has release a library of their own product, in a plethora of cabs,
i've listened to all the samples, and like several.

i would probably get a couple here, there, and make a few of my own.

i already have a weber mass lite i could use as the line out,
rme babyface pro for an interface,
should be pretty simple, eh?

i'm thinking of using MixIR convolution plug-in,
i understand it plays the entire 500ms sample at many sample rates

Try Torpedo Wall of Sound 4. It can load 3rd party IRs as well.

If you've a "real amp" consider trying a Palmer or Mesa speaker emulator/load box. Not cheap, but they sound fine and no cpu hit or latency issues at all.

Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board,
ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre.
Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

Re: your thoughts on guitar recording with IR's and impulses 2017/05/17 22:54:53 (permalink)
ok, let me quantify....

i have a '82 mesa boogie mark IIb 60 watt head,
and a plethora of cabinets.

i currently run the boogie thru a weber mass lite, at various levels of attenuation, to match the overdrive i pull out of the amp, with the volume in the studio.

i also have a Palmer PDI-09 that i use as a cab filter and direct box, when i want to go straight from head to interface.
this is currently my favorite way to collect my tracks on guitar.

i can mic cabs, and use the palmer at the same time, and combine tracks, which is the typical way i mix my guitar tracks.

i've used modelers before, and do not like them, for a variety of reasons i won't go into right now.

as the IR and convolution technology has progressed, i now see that this may be another level of capture that is worthwhile,
so i'm curious to see who is using it, and who has a/b'd it against units like the palmer or radial JDX, and live micing of cabinets.

i know that pros like pete thorn and scott henderson swear by them now,
and those guys came from very pure tube amp/miced cabs backgrounds.

 current rig layout:

cabs available:
demeter iso cab with eminence legend 112, roland closed back 1x12 with an old celestion G12C-30, roland open back 1x12 cab with a celestion heritage G12h-55, Avatar vintage closed back 1x12  with a celestion british greenback.

those maracas are not impulse responses....
they are purely impulse.

I use a Fractal Axe FX II and their cab lab product. I've built a few of my own IRs by combining and tweaking some I've bought.

It's another rabbit hole though...

Certainly can be...
That's one of the reasons why I think it's advantageous to create IRs of your favorite cabs.
You already know you like them.

I had a MESA Cab Clone.
It was ok...
I much prefer the sound of good IRs.

Hey bats,

Are the blue guitar cords the best?

At least they do compliment the yellow macacas.

Hey Bat - A bunch of us have different stuff we use.  It would be interesting if you put up a dry, direct guitar track we can each apply our different tools to and post the results with explanations of what we used.  Doesn't have to be long or fancy.  By using your track, all other variables such as guitar, pups, amp, etc. are taken out of it.

Straight up direct with no spkr/cab/mic emulations or IRs applied.

It'd be a fun experiment, for sure,
but i've got my guitar voice pretty dialed in,
i wont be messing with the tone generator side,
just the method of capturing it.

I'm really happy using IRs. Easier than micing a cab and more option available. IIt also sounds better than when I miced my amp. Of course I'm sure a pro engineer could do better, but on top of that I don't have tons of nice cabs and mics lying around, so it lets me get a greater variety of sounds than I would otherwise.

I'm not using hardware just an amp sim. Of course I've heard lots of people use real amps and send that into their DAW with great results i.e. Pete Thorn. As for software unless you plan on using 4 IRs at a time I'd go with a free solution. If you do want to use multiple at a time MixIR is supposed to be good.

Fractal Audio has a VST version of Cab Lab:

I have it, so if you have a few audio files you want me to run through it with some various cabs let me know - I got lots of IRs... :)

well, it's cool that they explain why having a ultra hi res file, with a longer tail, sounds better than the shorter ir's...

and makes the argument why some convolution hosts are better than others.

this is also of the opinion of scott henderson..
his point was that the MixIR will play the longer 500ms samples,
which sound more realistic than the shorter samples that most of the others are limited to.
