Ya'll seen the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Decent flick on it's own but I think particularly a good 'un for musicians.

I mean... to me it wasn't the bestest movie evar but as a music nerd definitely worth a watch. Kinda like "Crossroads". You gotta be a musician to really appreciate it.

I enjoyed it. Although...I didn't warm to the main character at all, and it stretched credulity just a tad that someone would be involved in a car crash and still carry on to the gig, no matter how committed he was.

Yeah, main kid was no Ralph Machio fershure (who wasn't that likeable himself in CR IMO).

I'd say (SPOILER) the crash was a little over done too but I can relate to that. I once walked into a rehearsal immediately after getting the sh*t kicked out of me... and that was just because I wanted to play my guit. There really wasn't anything big on the line.

I watched it about a week ago by one one those rando internet flukes and wasn't quite sure whether I liked it or not. But thinking back to it has been givin' me a warm fuzzy since so I guess I did.

It really did have a CR feel to it... even though it's a completely different flick.

I couldn't get past the trailer. There was a shot of the kid's bleeding hands...my idea of suffering for your art is staying up past bedtime for a gig.

I thought "Whiplash" was great. The music connection of course was great. But I also like movies where you have the hard-ass pushing their subordinates to achieve their best. "The Paper Chase" and "An Officer And A Gentkeman" come to mind right a way.

Didn't see the movie yet, but in Bill Bruford's autobiography he tells the story from Yes' early day of wondering where the rest of the guys were when the gig was rapidly approaching only to get a call from Chris Squire who was at the police station.

Jon Anderson was driving and had fallen asleep at the wheel and they went off the road. Everyone was miraculously OK, but Chris asked Bill to go over to the club and start setting up without them:

This was the only man I was ever going to know who could impose upon me, give me a near heart attack. force me to change my own plans, and then get me to set up his bass, all in the same sentence.

    From Bill Bruford The Autobiography

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
