The Case of the Unfreezable Synth [SOLVED]

Ever run into this before? I have, but it's been a long while and I don't remember what I did to resolve it.

I have an instance of Kontakt with 4 instruments, and it cannot be frozen. I click on the Freeze button, the "busy" cursor appears for about 2 seconds, and then nothing. It's as if SONAR found some reason the freeze could not be performed, and aborted.

I don't see anything unusual about these 9 tracks (5 MIDI, 4 audio, none are Instrument Tracks). Doesn't matter what freeze options are enabled or disabled.

Yes, I have had where the freeze button for a track is greyed out (along with the freeze button in the synth rack to the corresponding track). When all the other tracks are fine.
I can't remember how I fixed it, but you might try Unselecting everything and see if that helps.

Ive had freeze problems if i deleted outputs or had archived outputs... any chance this might apply?

Keni, you da man!

I had previously been using a Kontakt instrument for bass but switched over to Trillian and deleted the instrument from Kontakt. However, the old audio track was still there and was archived. Once I deleted it, the tracks could then be frozen. I'd been scratching my head over this one for hours!

I had the opposite issue today...I opened an older project which has several frozen syths but there were no longer any options to unfreeze them.

I cannot speak the this specific issue, however, I have had issues with unfreezing or freezing a synth.  Even though a synth was in focus the option to freeze or unfreeze were greyed out.  In all cases, I simply changed the focus by selecting a different synth and then returning the focus back to the synth I wanted to freeze or unfreeze.  Once I did that the option was no longer greyed out and I was able to complete the operation.  It's as if Sonar thinks I originally did not have the correct synth selected.  Moving to a different synth and then back again always works for me.

Hi Noel...

Not sure if this is what happened to Bitflipper, but I've had some experience with a few scenarios...

One was where I deleted some outputs from a drum synth after they were frozen.... then unfreezing and trying to freeze again was not working...

Another issue I found was if outputs from the same scenario were archived and I attempted to freeze the synth it fails...

I hope this is some kind of help?

I had a freeze issue with EZD2 set to multi output. It wouldn't freeze. I had done the drum "arranging" inside of EZD2. I exported to midi file, imported midi to midi track and then EZD2 would freeze all outputs. I didn't try it in stereo mode cause,.....well, I got it to work but that would have been my next try.

I've had that happen.  I believe it is a buffer thing.  If you exit out and back in sometimes you can freeze the synth if it is the 1st thing you do.  I use to go empty the Pic Cashe folder,  but I have not had to try that fix in a long, long time.

May not help, but when the Freeze button (*) doesn't work, I am still able to use the drop down to freeze.

My freezing woes relate more to unfreezing a synth in an older project only to find the synth and the wave disappear. To save the day I have to undo the unfreeze. If I want to resave the project after editing it, I have to reinsert the synth and figure out what sample set I used to restore the project. ..... Or simply leave the project alone and save any edits as a new one.

Dimension is the most notorious offender.

This is why I freeze all synth tracks before closing a project.

Re: The Case of the Unfreezable Synth 2017/06/02 21:47:49 (permalink)
Thanks for everyone's observations. As noted in my previous post, I did solve the problem (but neglected to update the thread title).

The issue was that I had an unused (and archived) audio track that used to be connected to Kontakt, but its .nki had been deleted, leaving the track orphaned. Once the unused track was deleted, SONAR happily froze the synth.

Thanks again to Keni for coming up with the critical clue.
