New song called "Breathe"

It`s been a while since I`ve recorded a song, but I finished this one last week. Got some help from a couple of friends with the bass guitar and the solo guitar.

Certainly hear the emotion in this song and that comes across very well. Nicely recorded and very poignant for the current time.

I agree with Adrian's comment. Very nice job on this Øyvind! I'd like to hear a little more top end on the snare, but other than that, I think the mix is pretty good as a whole.

The emotion comes across, I do wonder if there is a little to much compression and perhaps not enough upper mid.  Some interesting playing in that but it sounds hidden away.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice solid modern rock! I like it a lot! Strong vocal performance and pretty cool guitar stuff. (Nicely shredded solo)
Snare could be a little more in the face, indeed. What I've noticed is the chopped guitar riff driving the song, which is great b.t.w., is hanging all the way to right through the entire song. I found that slightly distracting. I would have
double-tracked the part and panned it hard L/R. Just my 2cents.
    Good stuff all around!

A fine song that is Øyvind, and what a great vocal performance.  Kind of makes me wish I would have had you sing my song Menace On The Loose when I was doing it (song about violence in the world).  Personally I would have liked to have heard a bit more of the that fine vocal, but maybe that's just me.  Great song, great performance.

Your voice is magical.  I'd like to hear it in other contexts, other than when its true to your style.  Your pieces are so full of emotion.  It's really rare.

    Øyvind . . . it's a brilliant rock'n tune, I'm really enjoying listening to it.
Gutsy vocals, nice guitar work . . . it's got it all except a great mix.
I'm hearing that because of the excess of compression, you either need to cut some low end, or bump up the 3-4k range of the vocals, so the vocal comes through clearer (I couldn't really decipher the vocals until I listened closely on headphones) . . . Øyvind, I'm even feeling sorry for my criticism of your mix, but I believe it's such a great tune, that it really deserves more experimenting with the mix to get it perfect.

Wow, Thank you all for great feedback!

Your accusations of too much compression on the vocals is probably spot on! Maybe I should try some more volume automation to take some load of the compressors?

I will look at the snare, and maybe add some top end to bring it out a bit :D

Regarding the guitar, Maybe it`s a good idea to hardpan, like Daniel said? I already have two guitars har panned (pumping through the whole song), would that interfere with hardpanning the riff guitar?

Again, thank you very much for all the kind words and for helping me pointing out issues in the mix!

I`m not sure if I understand what you mean about the chopped guitar riff... Are you refering to the pumping guitar..?

Yeah, call it pumping, palm-mutetd, anyway that awesome main riff going all the way through the song. To me it is  carrying the song and should be coming from both speakers, like really wide. Playing the same part twice as tight as possible and pan them hard L/R would be the first choice of options to me.  But this is only my humble opinion.
Otherwise, great song and production. I enjoyed it even more listening the 2nd time around. : )

I might just try that, thank you! How do I treat the guitar? Two identical instances panned hard? Or should I use slightly different effects on one of them?

Love the vocal.  Your command of natural vocal distortion is really something.

Lead guitar is very Michael Schenker with a little more chops. Nice solo.

If you take the effort and record a 2nd guitar track I would suggest the same amp sound, same guitar , pick up, effects and record exactly the same part one more time.
To try out if you like the idea you could start with a few bars and check the result.
Another way would be the good old trick where you copy the already existing track and shift the copy ever so slightly like 10ms later than the original track and than pan it. But double tracking will always sound better.
    Cheers,

    Daniel

Added some upper mids to vocals with multiband compression, and added some top to the snare... That kind of opened the song up a little, but it took some time getting used to the changes on the vocals... The snare sounded better right away :D The doubling and hard panning of the guitar didn`t go quite so well... I`ll have to spend some more time to see if I can solve that one :/

    wow - great stuff Øyvind.
Only small crit - the snare could do with more 'snap' to it especially in the big parts.
    Nevertheless, really very very good

    Thank you, very much :D

How do you have a suggestion on how to do it? I added some top to the snare, and felt like that gave it a little more snap, but maybe I should blend in some more of the compressed signal (mix knob on the compressor)?

Strong piece, especially the vocals as already mentioned.   Overall mix sounds good, though I do agree that the snare gets a bit buried....  or maybe it just sounds "small" compared to the guitars which are nice and present.   I also liked that "turntable-y" synth line that goes throughout - nice touch!

This is a very good mix and arrangement -- it all comes together well.  The guitars are very nice.  The vox is also good (but a bit too emo for my taste) -- in the higher register you sound a bit like Bono which is not a bad thing.  The one thing I didn't like is the title -- that breathe theme has been done to death in pop, cod soul and country.   I enjoyed the listen -- this is good work!
