My Country

Hello everyone.

This is a tune I recorded a few years ago, but haven't posted up here.  I actually finally got around to posting a bunch of tunes on my personal website.

This (as is common for me) is a cover of an obscure song.  This one by Roger Taylor (drummer for Queen).
It's called My Country (Parts 1 & 2).

This is definitely the most advanced thing I've recorded.  There are several parts to the tune, so if there is a section you don't like, wait a little bit and it'll change.  The whole thing is a bit over 6 minutes.

I'd love to get your feedback on what I've done with it.

Equipment in use:
Sonar x3 (I think that' where the majority of this was mixed. It might have been recorded in various versions along the way back to probably 8.5)
SampleTank 2
vDrums
Roland Handsonic
Line 6 Variax
Variax 5 String Bass
Rode NT1

Great job on this tune.  Definitely has that later Queen sound.   My only crits would be more bottom end (no pun intended - Fat Bottom Girls).  The bass parts seem a little thin.  A little thickness and distortion will make John Deacon proud.   I am a big Queen fan.  They rank number 3 with me although I like their earlier stuff.  I guess that would be Classic Queen.

Maybe John Deacon would be, no doubt, though I'm pretty sure that Roger played all the instruments on the original, for what that's worth.  Anyway - listening back after your comment (after having listed to this SO many times on several systems), I don't disagree.  I Could use a bit more bottom.  Actually in both the kick drum and the bass guitar.

I mixed this a couple years ago and got tired of doing it over and over and got to a pretty satisfactory place, I thought.

I am waiting for a new drum module to come in (maybe a month or so): a Pearl Mimic Pro.  I may re-address this at that time, though I may have used a plugin or two that I no longer have working.

    Thanks for listening.  Anyone else?

Cool, it's got a nice organic feel to it, the vocals sound great, and there's lots of space around everything.    I've never heard the song itself before but I liked it.   Then again, I've been a Queen fan for a few decades so there is that.

Thanks Steve.  Roger's stuff is always such a departure from Queen's sound.  I think it's generally less musically "mature" (unlike Brian May's, which carries many of the Queen qualities), but it's also interesting because it is so different.  The "Fun In Space" album was very "Early 80s" and definitely a complete departure from what Queen was doing at the time.

Here's this particular song, for those who would like to hear the original as a reference.  I left many things the same, but some things are different from the original (for example, I did it somewhat slower and the breaks are definitely different): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hvYH-qrqnI

Having just listened to the original version, I have to say that you did a really good job with this!    It sounds very much like the original, but with the slightly slower tempo and other minor arrangement/mix changes it comes across a little more modern.
