Creating Stereo Effect On A Mono Song.

Hi Everyone:
I have Sonar Artist, The Basic Version.  I have using it since February.  I want to create a stereo effect on a mono song.  I take a mono song and delay it through another music software program.  I then import the song from my desktop into Cakewalk.  I want to both equalize and pan center in the right channel.  I have switched from Track to Console view and although there are several dials to play with, the dials are not really doing the job.  I also imported the song (file)  into 16 bit and still nothing.  I did come across an A and A B switch.  I cannot locate them again.  Any suggestions and thank you in advance.  ED

Not understanding the parts I emboldened, can you explain what you mean?

Hi Jyemz:
I want to edit the left and the right channels separately in the wave file that I have imported into Cakewalk.  Examples, panning the bottom channel right to the center and EQing both left and right channels separately.  Ed

Not entirely sure what you're trying to achieve, but you could import the mono WAV file twice onto separate tracks, then apply EQ, panning or effects to them independently.

Jyemz:
Thanks for your reply.  I mentioned in the original post that I did that.  I imported the same file twice.  I had used a delay in another program.  I wanted to use Cakewalk to EQ both sides and to pan center from the right channel to produce a stereo effect.  Both The EQ and Panning Dials don't do much.  I was wondering if there was a way to work on each channel seperatley?  Ed

FWIW The Beatles approved the mono mixes of their songs and then hated the stereo mixes the engineers cooked up when they (The Beatles) went home.

That should be a lesson for you.

I agree with Bapu. It is one thing to turn a single or a few mono sources into a stereo within a whole multitrack mix but to turn a complete mono mix into stereo is asking for trouble.  No matter what you use it will always sound bad when collapsed into mono.  And it won't sound that great in stereo either.

Not that it matters much to our mods but this thread should be moved to Techniques.

I beg to differ.  This can be achieved without phasing issues.  Once the track has been imported twice, and I have done this.  Panning of each channel does not seem to work.  Is there a way to independently pan each channel seprataley.  This is my question.  anyone have the answer?  Thank you.  Ed

What you want to do is split your imported (presumably stereo) file into two mono tracks. You can do this in SONAR using the "bounce to track(s)" feature and selecting "split mono" as the channel format.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Forget the set up (which should be easy, really - if you imported the song twice, you have two tracks so pan one left and the other right).

I don't see how you can make either side sound like "a side" easily.  Are you going to arbitrarily take frequencies that are dominated by an instrument and reduce the volume of those frequencies on one side?  In other words, if you want the guitarist to be as if he's standing on the right side of the stage (the left as you would look at him), then you would want to take his dominant frequencies and lower the volume of those frequencies on the right channel.  This will naturally make them louder on the left side (something you could also do I suppose - make those same frequencies a little louder on the left channel) and your brain will think he's on that side of the stereo spectrum when it listens to both tracks at once.  Rinse and repeat for the other side-to-side instruments (usually keyboards to the right or a second guitarist).  Bass, drums and the lead singer are typically straight up the middle.

I agree with Batsbrew, adding any delay to one side doesn't create a stereo image and is ripe for phase issues.

Nor do I. If he has two identical tracks, panned left and right, they'll collapse to centre.

Exactly!  But, for a wide stereo image, you need a really big duck...

There's lots of the original post that I don't understand.

For instance, what is meant by "I take a mono song and delay it through another music software program" and what is the goal here?
