Sonar now hogging audio driver 2017.06

I see under preferences that "Share audio driver with other applications..." has been replaced by "Suspend audio engine when Sonar is not in focus". However, other software can no longer access my audio interface when Sonar is running. I have tried checking and unchecking the option, but Splat seems unprepared to share the candy around with the other kids in the playground. This means I have to now close Sonar in order to check a rendered mix/master etc.

My AI is a Focusrite Safire Pro 40.

I started this thread about the issue and at least one other is reporting the same issue so maybe a bug.

Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

I think that this is a limitation with ASIO.  I can share audio with Windows just fine if I minimize Sonar while audio is playing.

But if I open another audio app that accesses ASIO, no dice!

Same thing here , can minimise Sonar and still nothing,it refuses to actually "suspend" the audio.

ASIO cannot share with two applications, regardless of Sonar settings.

Use WASAPI if you want to run two DAW applications.

And according to Noel Borthwick, ASIO is totally capable of sharing the driver as long as Sonar is not in focus.
    So something is wrong.
Whats the trade off though  ?
Are WASAPI equal to or better than using ASIO   ?
I do find myself wanting to check audio in another application more and more and the ability to do that without closing Sonar would be a huge time saver, but i wouldn't want to lose quality or huge increase in latency .
