Tascam us1641 latest driver update v2.07 Anyone using it, yet?

I've just seen this latest Tascam driver for my us1641 I/O.  Is anyone else using it?
I've been tracking and not wanting to test it, till I've got this next batch done.

Thanks for pointing that out, I never check updates assuming they had left the 1641 in the dust but I guess not. Another reason to think of Tascam when shopping for an interface-- long term support.
I mostly use mine with W7 and my portable studio for live gigs. I use my Scarlett with my main DAW on windows 10. I just downloaded it and will test but this will take a long while,, its Summer and I don't come inside much these days..And I don't think my DAW is upto date on windows as it's mostly off line,, don't like to fix what isn't broke right now. the few hours I get to record are not to be wasted updating stuff...

My pleasure, Johnny V!
I was going to PM you, and then thought a thread might serve us all, better.
I think I'm going to install and see what happens even though I am in the middle of tracking extra parts; better acoustic guitars and additional vocals, etc
I've also got my us1641 set up with my laptop out in our breezeway, which is bigger than my control room, where my desktop and 18i20/OctoPre MkII are. All the mics are out there. It's quieter and sounds better being more than 2 +1/2 X the size.
I'll post back after the fact....

Ya I downloaded it to my office machine which is windows 10 updated to the new OS. I have Sonar on it but I don't use it for recording, only reference for the forum.. It has gone into Demo mode for some reason lately and I haven't fixed that as it doesn't seem to matter.. just can't save which I am not doing anyhow.

But I would be curious to see if there is better RTL performance at least.
The us1641 drivers from 2014 are excellent and at this point in time there is very little difference between using my Scarlett 6i6 or the Tascam. It's really a matter of desk space and the Scarlett is nice and compact. The Tascam is in a 3 space rack unit with a power conditioner ready to roll to gigs. Looks like we'll be getting another couple years service yet! Not bad for $300!

Yeah, not bad at all!
I bought mine with the confidence of previous Tascam(a 38, then 4 DA38+ 822PCI card and 4 Teac R to R's  before that)gear. So, this customer support is really encouraging!
I'm hoping for improved RTL, too, but have had no problems with the last driver/us1641 at all and feel as good about it as my 18i20, too.

At this point, I've not been to install the Tascam v2.07 driver, though I didn't notice at first that it says (on the Tascam site us1641 download page)     this is a "Windows 10 pre-Creators update".
http://tascam.com/product/us-1641/downloads/

I wonder if that means it won't work after that update. It isn't but I don't know why.

OK Michael I finally had a chance so I hooked the 1641 to my office computer which is running Windows 10 1703 Creative update.
I downloaded and installed the 2.07 driver without issue. Make note that you need to keep the Tascam OFF until the installer asks you to plug it in ( or turn on)
Seems to be working no problem on this version.
Set it as my default audio device and playing Win Amp right now.
I'm just downloading all the Sonar stuff and will bring it up to date and test later today.

My routine is to test Sonar on the office machine and transfer the downloads to my DAW and Laptop. I then run CCC and it update using those downloads. It's faster and saves bandwidth.

I got mine installed and working, too. I'd forgotten about the "rules". LOL
No change in RTL, but then I don't suppose nothing really changed in the firmware path. Oh well.....

12 msec RTL on the us1641 @ 44.1khz vs my 1st generation 18i20 working nicely at 6.9 msec RTL   ... but I'm not tracking more than a couple channels at a time.

At the Normal setting I'm getting 26 ms RTL @ 44.1.

Seems to work fine I opened a Sonar Project and it plays etc.
So not sure what they changed but, what ever. They usually post a document explaining the updates. And now I'm not sure why they are claiming the W10 Pre 1703 either as it seems to work fine on that.

Yeah, I set mine to lowest latency, but have yet to test it. Hope to do some tracking/testing today and will report back afterwards.
I have the drive space to go to 48, but have so many projects started at 44.1, that I suppose a mixer is the best way around the latency with it. Do you use a mixer with yours?
It makes me miss my Mackie 24-8 and Aardvark Q10 (PCI)!
Maybe Tascam will do a post Creators update! LOL

Re: Tascam us1641 latest driver update v2.07 Anyone using it, yet? 2017/07/23 16:17:26 (permalink)
My Yamaha 01v only runs at 44.1 so therefore in the past I stayed with that so I could use the SPDIF inputs of the TAscam and then the 6i6. I have changed my set up and now use a Joe Meek 3 Q as my input for vocals, A Fender rumble for bass input. I use the 2 front inputs on the Scarlett for my guitars,, miked or DI'd. I also use small Mackie Mix 8 for cue mix so I don't really use the 01v anymore.
I highly recommend something like the Mix 8 for monitoring. You can run the 3/4 output into it.  I have a second output from the Joe Meek as well as a second mike on my amp. It allows 100% LOUD control over your cue mix.
100's of projects are in 44.1 and I would rather go 48 as I do believe there is a difference but I'm not sure when and where I'd make the swicth over.
I leave both my interfaces at a middle setting ( 256?)  and never change this. It seems to work for all the stuff I do both tracking and mixing. I haven't had a drop out in years.

I do use a my 01v mixer when I record a live band with the Tascam.
Because I need compression on certain channels I'll use the 01V for lead vocals, snare, kick and Bass.
I'll use the SPDIF for the drum overheads because that's stereo.
I use 11/12  13/ 14 fed from my 4 Aux outs of the 01v. and the SPDIF so there's the back 6 channels.
Then the front 8 XLR get guitar amps, back up vocals and other drum mikes, The 9/10 I've used for acoustic guitar and Amp TRS DI outs.  Keyboards use the midi so there's all 17 channels. I also might use a stereo USB board mix feed and run Sonar in WDM mode ( now WASAPI ) so projects can have 18 audio tracks.

I was under the impression that I can't use WASAPI.... can I? Never tried WDM either......

I've got more inputs than I use with the OctoPre MkII, especially since selling my Virus Ti2.

I've been wishing for a Mackie 1642vlz4, as I'd like 4 buses and direct outs. I've had a handful of Mackies over the decades, and not having a mixer feels weird! LOL   Like you, I've come from the "old school hardware days" (started playing in August '63), so my brain just "leans" towards that approach.

I often advise guys to read Ethan Winer's article on using a mixer with your DAW, but haven't had the funds to "straighten my situation out".

WASAPI or WDM Are fine for recording a band. Live Recording does not involve latency as everything is recorded at the same time so you could have 100ms of RTL and it would not matter, all the tracks would be perfectly aligned.
You need to use ASIO for overdubbing and all other processes in Sonar.  Once you start overdubbing  latency matters and Sonar need ASIO to adjust the timing offset. All other driver modes do not report latency properly to Sonar only ASIO so they usually show up late on the time line.

Thanks, Johnny V, that makes it quite clear and reminds me about RME I/O's using their own protocols. Jim Rosenberry pointed out that the MOTU AVB Ultralite has a usb RTL of 4.9 which compares nicely to the "RTL range", I'd like to aim for. I haven't had much of an issue with the Tascam and certainly not with the 18i20 (v1), but one can dream.

Oh wow, I thought they had long stopped updating this. I'm using an old version after tyring them all this was the only one I could get to work. Not without its issues though. I have to have the computer on a few mins before turning the tascam on or I get a blue screen of death.

I might try this new version though. Cheers.

I also assumed they'd stopped updating the drivers for this 10+ year old product and missed that this came out in 2015     I'd gotten the December 2014 update, but only recently went to Tascam to check.
Maybe they'll do it again!

I have used my us1641 with at least 12 different computers from XP 32 bit up to the latest W10 64 bit. Under XP there where issues which in retrospect where probably the computer not the interface. But as a rule it never gave me problems. I bought my Scarlett 6i6 strictly for portability and at this point there is little difference in performance or stability between the 2 interfaces..
I've never had a blue screen and I always leave mine turned on. Try a different USB port.

Yep. I have had smooth sailing with the 1641 since they stabilized the driver in XP, like 10 years ago!?!?!
