I'm not particularly fond of the song.  But it's done extremely well, and your voice is great for this style.

Cool song. Background vocal are great. Your range is good.

I feel the guitar could be tighter, tone wise. I'm a gain junkie, I have, and always will, use too much gain, lol.
But with that you can loose definition. Tough balance. Sounds like you could use more gain to me though. If it's a DI track to a sim, make sure the DI sounds good first. Maybe different preamp? Or different sim, haha

Bass was fine. Popped out a couple times, so I heard it. That was good. Maybe could be richer? Double with a distorted bass mixed in to taste? A little more lows?

The kit sounds too dry for my taste. Live or midi? I think you told me on another thread. Can't remember.
Individual tracks? If so, I'd beef up the kick a little. Double with a deeper sample maybe. Of course compress.
Snare sounds a tad boxy. Real sounding though, but I think I'd cut around 400? WHat do I know haha. Oh, and the toms should be louder and thicker.

Vocals sound good too, but again it feels singular. Maybe a short slapback? I've tried a second take just tucked underneath for thickness. But then that gets tiresome too. I'm sure I'm wrong on this, but I like vocals on a rock song to sound like they are singing with the bands volume, not overpowering the band. Your level sounds right, but occasionally I hear a band with the vocals down a tad. I like that.

These are not criticisms, just what I would do if I was handed the tracks. :)

Definitely a toe tapper though.

Holy Crap, just listened to it 4 times. Oh! The solo was great!!

5th listen, turned it up. There's the kick. It's thicker than I first thought...but you knew that

Re: FOR lOVE - (Rock) 2017/07/05 15:13:27 (permalink)
Thanks everyone! My brother is the vocalist, I am the guitar player.

The drums are a live kit, we jobbed out them and the Bass together. I only sampled the kick with one from Slate trigger. They did provide a couple room mics, but I use them sparingly in the mix, they didn't sound very good in my opinion.

The bass is a DI track only with a some EQ and compression, the amp track they provided had too many upper harmonics that drove me crazy.

I used Scuffhams amp sim on the guitars, You are correct about the DI's biddi4, I am not too crazy about them. They were done with an ESP & active EMG's, I have since purchased an Epiphone les paul with real Gibson pickups, I will probably re-do the DI's and reamp with my Marshall DSL-40 combo.

i will play around with the snare some more, maybe add a sample as well. I will also try the suggested slap echo on the vocals, that's a great idea!

Thanks again for all the feedback!

I guess us rock guys have to look elsewhere for recording technique critiques.

For a DAW user forum, there seems to be an awful lot of critique, (good and bad), towards lyrics, and song arrangements, and less on mixes. While I do like hearing opinions on the song, I know my intention for posting was to have more experienced people than I, with great monitors and studios, respond and help with proper mixing. Like, use of reverb and compression properly.

But, because our songs are in the hard rock category, they get overlooked. Seems kinda clicky.....

Yeah, it's hard to find places that get the early Rock/Metal stuff.

I often hit gearslutz, tons of people there that give good reviews of recording techniques.

Great song - definitely reminded me of 80's hair bands.

A couple of suggestions:
The pre-chorus seemed to take forever and then I didn't feel there was enough of a payoff in the first chorus for that wait.  The second chorus also didn't go anywhere from the second verse.  I'd consider boosting something in the first chorus a bit more and dropping the overall level of the second verse (I think its the same as the first chorus.)  Maybe even apply the same boost (or a different one in the second chorus.)

Otherwise, it is a rockin' song.

Nice, a solid rockin' tune with a bit of that early 80's metal vibe.  Particularly the solo - loved it.  Short, sweet and rippin'.

The drums do sound live (of course) but they didn't seem particularly out of place to me.  Maybe a little more verb on the snare but that's about it.  Guitars sound great, the bass seems in the pocket, and the vocals ride over top nicely.
