I already rock. Now I roll. Downhill. It's faster than walking and I'm quite round anyway.

I am not kidding when I say Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda was the main impetus for me to start playing guitar.

It's of course kind of silly but yup... good ole Eddie Fingers is what made me cross over to the wank side.

To be fair I first heard them when I was 6 and combobulated the inital foundation of my life's grand scheme over the next six years at which point I had finally screeched and squealed enough to the "adults" in my world to convince them that they should totally buy me guitar crap and maybe spring for a few lessons.

And then... IT... began.

They were a huge influence on me. It was the other half, Jay Jay French, that gave the confidence to pick up the axe. French did a very down to earth column in Guitar for the Practicing Musician that explained simple things like how to form a band. Gave me a reason to practice, and dare to dream bigger than just hanging out in my bedroom.

A deep chesty bawl echoes from rimrock to rimrock, rolls down the mountain, and fades into the far blackness of the night. It is an outburst of wild defiant sorrow, and of contempt for all the adversities of the world. - Aldo Leopold

To play guitar, I was influenced by The Beatles. They first arrived in the USA on my 11th birthday in 1964.

To play the bazz I was influenced by Jimi Hendrix. I realized I'd never be a lead guitarist once I heard him.

Saw them countless times in their club days. I lived a few blocks from the L'Amour rock club in Brooklyn, so I basically saw every show they played there. 3 sets a night. Fantastic performers and very, very tight. Always had a good time.

So I was supposed to be influenced by someone?  Maybe that's why my guitar playing never came close to my so-called "potential..."

a) everyone is influenced by someone.

b) 'never came close'?  Unless both your hands have fallen off, pick up a guitar and get on with it!

I had to get rid of all my gear (the court said I could keep $300 worth of gear - ha!).  Of course, I "sold" one custom guitar back to my luthier and the other one (still being built, but paid for) was put on hold (Space Cowboy here bought my other custom).  I heard that my luthier began to carve the top over the July 4th holiday so, eventually, I'll have both that guitar AND my first custom back (once I can afford to buy it back, I have to pay back two friends who helped me get job training and a car first).  I should note that my luthier does it as a hobby, he's an IT guy like me for a university in Kentucky and, though lucky to survive a large number of layoffs, is now swamped with work.

I'm coming back, just slowly!  I've only had a job for about 10 months and just got a raise in May.  There's not a whole lot of extra cash left after my (very low) expenses but I'm catching up on a lot of things.

The double-neck one was pretty cool though.  It's rare to see that in an air guitar.

Re: With all do respect Twisted Sister 2017/07/07 19:59:01 (permalink)
only now 'Stay Hungry' album by Twisted Sister, great album imo.
and like they didn't become arrogant and still gave it all on live shows, at least that's what I've read as I didn't see them live ever unfortunately.

Craig the good news is you can get a really proper guitar for little money these days.
The Squier 'classic vibe' and 'vintage modified' series are just proper guitarsa for example.
Sure you feel the difference immediately if you pickup a Fender after playing a Squier, Fenders have an even more quaility, durable feel imo but that doesn't make the Squiers bad at all.
And soundwise they're eve closer and in some cases as good as or better than some of the cheaper Fenders imo.

For Gibson type guitars I can recommend Les Pauls, SG copies by a UK brand called 'Vintage', imo a step up soundwise from fe Epiphone.
The Vintage Fender models get good reviews too.

I appreciate my Squier/Vintage guitars so much I wouldn't buy a Fender or Gibson if I were rich.

Re: With all do respect Twisted Sister 2017/07/08 17:05:32 (permalink)
I think I may officially become the world's first Twisted Sister hipster with this statement but IMO Under the Blade was a far superior album than Stay Hungry was (from a music perspective). I played my cassette of that obsessively. I did not own You Can't Stop Rock and Roll but friends did and although I have not heard it in years it also was superior to Stay Hungry from my recollection.

Love Is For Suckers was the other one I owned but it was... not so good.

Here's live footage of TS performing Under the Blade (just the song) in 82. It's just oozing with that raw "RIP IT UP!!" energy mentioned up thread.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPklZuIcqBQ

Also I decided to peruse the TS wiki page...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twisted_Sister

Apparently their first record deal was with a UK punk label and a young Mettalica opened for them on tour. Due to the extremely dated outfits, choreography and nature of the music (especially the hits) TS is kind of the brunt of (usually affectionate) jokes but for the time period they really did write/play some of the purest metal of their time. I'd say the only other top bands REALLY cranking out what I consider pure metal (that I can respect) during that period are Iron Maiden and Judas Preist (was never a big Preist fan but they were most definitely metal).

Play it Loud Muthas!

Dee Snyder wrote one of the biggest hit songs ever produced. Celine Dion sang it in the Titanic movie. He's set for life because of that 1 song.

Snider is a smart dude. Out of all the things I respect him for his testimony during that "Parents Against Rock" silliness is top of the list. Right up there with Zappa and Biafra*... but he managed to be less abrasive than them and likely had more of a positive effect on the precedings simply by being likeable and down to earth.

I think people were legitimately shocked that the freaky looking, make up wearing weirdo who poses with teeth bared at raw turkey(?) legs was a decent guy "you could have a beer with".

Ya, Dee's alright.

*edit: Weird, I thought Jello had testified at those hearings but apparently (AFAICT based on my curious intertube poking) he didn't. I must have been recalling testimony from some other 1A proceeding (maybe the Geiger thing... or some other official thingie where he was mouthing off... brilliantly).

Sorry 'bout that. I was like 8 yo at the time. I was however two years deep into my lurv affair with metal.
